North Carolina Spring qtr. registration held next week Early registration for spring quarter begins next week, and a number of changes m the procedure could have a big effect on students who register early. The changes, announced by the office of the registrar, are designed to make the process more equitable for all students. Registration materials will be available on the second floor of the UC February 7-8. When you pick up your packet of registration materials, you'll be given a permit to register and an appointment time for early registration, set for Feb. 15-17. Hang on tight to the permit to register, because if you lose it you won't be able to get a new one until Feb. 17. the last day of early registration. And you won't be able to get into the Grandroom without it. Next, see your adviser and make sure your schedule takes into account the semester conversion planned for next fall. (If you need to repeat any courses, this spring is the last regular term to repeat courses offered under the quarter system.) Be sure to pick out some alternate courses, and to get your adviser's signature on all the necessary forms, because once you leave the Grandroom during early registration, you will not be permitted to re-enter the registration area. Also, if you remove any opscan course cards from the Grandroom without turning them in to a final checker, the cards will not be accepted at a later registration unless they have been validated by the department head. A final change has to do with the payment of fees by students who register early. Such students are expected to pay their fees by mail before Feb. 25. This quarter, students who fail to do so will be asked to return to campus March 17 (the day before regular registration begins) to pay their fees. This procedure is expected to ease the problem of long lines at the accounting office during the regular registration period, caused by students who registerd early but did not pay their fees early. Choral conductor to hold clinic Dr. Elmer Thomas, head of the division of ensembles and conducting at the College Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati will conduct a choral music clinic at WCU Friday and Saturday. Dr. Thomas, who holds the doctoral degree from the University of Illinois, has served as director of the May Festival and Chorus in Cincinnati for several years and as Exxon Artist Affiliate with the Atlanta Symphony, conducted by Robert Shaw. He has served as clinician, all oyer the United States. Clinical sessions will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, in the band room, Old Student Union, and at noon, 1 and 2 p.m. in the rehearsal room. 108 Hoey. Dr. Thomas will meet with the student chapter of Music Educators National Conference at 4:30 p.m. in Brown. Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., Dr. Thomas will conduct an open rehearsal of the WCU concert choir in Hoey Auditorium. All sessions are open to students, faculty and the general public. Rent amount agreement important by Gary Brown [This is the second of a four-part series on landlord-tenant relations.] The central part of your lease agreement is the rent, how much and when it is due. The landlord cannot change the rental amount during the effective period of the lease without your consent. Be sure you know what rent you will owe the landlord and when it will be due before signing or agreeing to the lease. Regular habits in paying the rent and getting a receipt for it will reduce misunderstanding between you and the landlord. The tenant who is prepared with all the rent receipts is also in a much better position to resist unjust evictions. If you pay the landlord or his agent in person, always ask for a receipt which shoyvs the date of payment, the amount paid, and the rental periods. If you pay by money order, be sure to note on the money order the date you sent it and the rental period the payment is for. If you pay by check, be sure to note on it the date you send it and the rental period the payment is for. When the bank returns your cancelled check, keep it as a record of your payment. If you do not pay the entire rental amount when it is due. the landlord must demand (orally or in yvriting) all unpaid rent. If you have not paid the entire amount within ten days of the demand, the landlord can start legal preceedings to evict you. What should you do then? NEXT WEEK—EVICTION. Robinson says Fuel order no problem WCU's scheduling will not be affected by N.C. Gov. Jim Hunt's Tuesday order for state employees to cut the work week back, according to WCU Chancellor H. F. Robinson. Hunt appealed to public and private schools to reschedule evening activities and indoor sporting events in afternoons. Robinson said he thought moving to a 10 hour day. for example, would be detrimental to students' educations. "We can't close the library- down to 10 hours a day," Robinson said. Western's 30-day fuel tanks have about a 20-day supply now. because fuel is being delivered, according to Robinson. WCU's burners use type number six heavy oil. yvhich is not in unusually short supply, but which poses some transportation problems because a truck with a heating coil is required to haul it. Robinson said. Western has made an effort to cut heating temperatures back to 65 degrees, and to lower hot water temperatures. "It's been keeping me on the ball." Robinson said.
