  • Carolinian THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN ©rT77 THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 1977 OPINION Student apathy: bitch, bitch, bitch We Find the fact that no students showed up at the first parking problems study committee meeting while every day we hear somcbodv bitching about the situation, which is indeed biU liable, interesting but disappointing. Writing letters to the newspaper and talking about il among friends is fine, but if you reallv want to become involved in something that is working towards reasonable solutions to real problems, vou have to take the time and trouble to show up where the action is. We doubt that every thing you suggest to the parking committee will be followed to the "T", but the popular voice, if heard, is often very persuasive on this campus, because most administrators here understand that student activism is bad for business. So, before the boycotts are formed and somebody plants a bomb in campus security offices, let's sec a few faces at the meeting today at 2 p.m. It's the last one. See you there? NO! to death The Western Carolinian remains vehemen- ently opposed to capital punishment existing in the United States. We have read the numerous conclusive reports that tell us capital punishment is not a deterrent to crime. The only service it can perform is revenge. The death penalty is the most vulgar manner in which a society can express its "concern" for its own sick products. The purpose of a penal system is rehabilitation, psychological treatment, and deterrence of crime, not justification used to satisfy the peculiar lust for revenge still exisitng in this so-called "civilized world or to conveniently get rid of the world's mistakes. Although it costs the taxpayers of North Carolina about $5,000 per year to keep a person in a prison, we would just feel better if our tax dollars were going to a rehabilitation effort that just might succeed rather than to aid in the death of a mortal deemed by other petty mortals-poor lawyer and judge-type mortals at that-as too indecent to live on their r&&i (fi^fG-^-OMiiaaa MPW& SWP£n9ji Look AT WAT VtoWZ_i Kids sHDUDur m Earth. Who is being indecent here, and who criminally wronged? Analogy a stinker Dear Editor, The attempted analogy between Socrates and Gilmore that was published in the Western Carolinian was disgusting. It was not only a pitiful and weak attempt, but it shows an extreme lack of knowledge of the philosophy of Socrates. I he author would do well to invest in a few basic courses in philosophy before any further attempts of this tvpe are undertaken. This attempt was mere opportunism. Patrick Murphy KGB better than . . Dear Comrade Editor. As a freshman. I remember wondering if K.G.B. would be a waste of time. I must admit I thought I'd To THAT STUFF! look pretty silly selling my country's Commies. To tell the truth, K.G.B. is a challenge. A real challenge. It's been thrilling and the Russkies have learned a lot. lhe best part is, if I live until graduation. 1 know I'll have a job—and it won't be using intelligence. It'll be selling it. I earn what it takes to be a traitor. You too can get the kind of espionage and back-slabbing experience that will make an asset of you in any country, capitalist or communist. Tim Sikes Conduct criticized Dear Editor Just to comment on the behavior of some WCU fans at the WCU vs. A&T State basketball game Jan. 10 when a WCU player entered the game and boos were heard. Booing your own player is not only rude and immature, but also creates a negative atmosphere which makes it difficult for a player to play his best. It is assumed that students who have reached the college level would also have reached a level of mental maturity that exhibits fellow esteem. Just one more comment for those slow maturing students-grow up! M. Dowdy K. Bracken C. Waynick Carolinian praised? Dear Editor. 1 was fortunate enough to run across an issue of the Western Carolinian the other dav-and let me tell you what-it made my day. In my life I have never seen a publication so complete, so organized, so intellectually stimulating, so unbiased. How do you do it? Is it the paper clips you use? By the way. is Greg Teetsell?
