  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY. OCTOBER 7, 1976 CAP center: unique approach Students at Western Carolina have at their disposal a most unique approach to student development in the Counseling, Advising and Placement Center located in Dodson Cafeteria. CAP Director Ray Ledford is not aware of any other CAP-structured centers. In most institutions, the three areas are in separate administrative units, different physical facilities, and report to different university officials. The idea behind the CAP Center is the three areas are so closely related they should be located physically and administratively under one roof. Trie responsibility of the Director is to see that the center functions as one unit. Three coordinators are directly responsible for staff, programming, and to the Director. Counseling is headed by Dr. Tom Westcott. Westcott has four staff members working solehy with the Counseling aspect; all have degrees in counseling. Marilyn Jody heads the Advising program. Two half-time and thirty-one part-time workers constitute this department. Placement has two well qualified employees: Larry Bi.xbv and Suzy Ray. Even the clerical part of the center is included in the integrated plan. After a great deal of preparation the center officially opened its doors the first week in July. Various universities in Texas, Michigan, and surrounding states were consulted about their success in some component relevant to the CAP Center. Southern Methodist was helpful in providing ideas for the Advising department. CAP is strue- tured on ideas supplied by successful examples and an innovative staff. Another unique element of CAP is the overwhelming support received from numerous groups. Around the UCB For those of you who read it, last week's article about the UCB adequately explained what the UCB is, but no mention was made of where. On the first floor of A.K. Hinds University Center is an information desk. Between this information desk and the front stairwell lies an open door, leading into a reception area. Branching off of this reception area, in what is actually the front left-hand corner of the University Center, are the UCB and UC offices. The UCB offices may be found in the back right-hand corner and the first office on the left as you enter the reception area. Ihe secretary and the business manager of the UCB share the office in the back corner, while the president and vice-president hold court in the first office on the left. Office hours for individual officers are posted on the doors. To the left of the president and vice-president's office is a large partitioned box mounted on a bulletin board. Each board member has been allocated one of the cubbyholes to use as a daily communications headquarters and which is accessible to his or her committee members. STUDY GOD'S WORD at 10A.M. SUNDAY bible study 11AM SUNDAYWORSHIP 7 PM SUNDAYWORSHIP 7:30 PM WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY [Notice: it says "God's Word" - not the opinions or ideas of a man.] Bob Rigdon will direct the study, and any of us will be glad to give you a lift to where the Church of Christ meets in Sylva: The UC staff occupies the desk in the reception area and the remaining three offices, where the director, assistant director, and the administrative assistant may be found. Baxter Wood, Tim Jacobs, and Jayne Wells, respectively, occupy these positions from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office area, however, is kept open the hours of the UC (thus enabling access to the cubbyholes until midnight) by the night manager. Please note that although no publicity is allowed on the exterior of the University Center, publicity within the UC is allowed-when restricted to cork-board surfaces on the first and second floors. Ihe eventsboard next to the information desk will post controlled announcements of campus happenings, updated on Sunday afternoons by a committee member on the publicity committee. All announcements must be submitted to the events- board cubbyhole in the UCB office area the previous Thursday in order to be posted. Two more bulletin boards available for general announcements and area publicity are located on the second floor by the front stairway. Across from the Student Government Productions (SGP) on the Student Government Association (SGA) office- block wall hangs the sales and services board. Beginning next week, misplaced announcements will be destroyed, in order to maintain and enforce. an organized publicity policy within the Un: sity Center. Future events: the Three and Four Muskateers shown by the UC Cinema at 7 p.m. in Hoey Auditorium Wednesday for $1. and a dance with Celebration in the Grandroom from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight Friday for 50 cents. The UCB would like to thank all the students who attended the general committee meeting. The meeting was a great success.
