SPORTS I Monday's win helps Catamount's by Hank Komodou ski Western Carolina University's basketball team returned to a< tiou Monday night and adder1 another win to a so far lackluste 3-5 record. What is not as evident, however, is what lies behind the current WCU mark. Tough competition, untimely injuries, and a tough road schedule have all played their parts. The 109-94 loss to NC State was the closest anyone had gotten to the Wolfpack until Wake Forest erupted over the weekend. The 88-76 loss to Auburn turns out to be nothing to be ashamed of as the Tigers are leading the Southeastern Conference and have only- lost one game. had a 1-4 record and Valdosta sported a b-0 mark, the Valdosta coach remarked that Ins team hail upset WCU. This high praise of the Cats' ability obviously came from the caliber of opponents the two teams had played. Starting forward Willie Hamilton was also lost in the second game of the season. No, this is not an excuse lor a losing record, or even a cry ol sour grapes. What it is. however, is a summary of how a record does not always equal a team's Worth. It's nice though lo sec some quality competition lor a change in the WCU basketball program. Perhaps the days of meaningless games with teams like Piedmont College. Southern Marshall University was the Tech. and others are finally only a scene of another Catamount de- part of history. teat. At the time. Marshall was undefeated, they have now lost a grand total of two games. Even a matchup with Valdosta Slate turned into a challenge when the Cats arrived in Columbus. Ga. to find a 6-0 team ready lor them. An interesting note is that even though WCU The Catamounts' sub-par performance is a cause for concern for coach Fred Conley as he docs not fully blame the lack of game action lor his team's lackluster showing. "Physically, 1 did not expect ns to play our best game of the season alter being oil as long as uc were, but I DID expect a better mental effort," said Cori lev. "We did not play very smart basketball and execute our offense with enough discipline anil patience. Therefore, we got hurl on our transition to defense anil gave up a lot of easy baskets." he explained. The Catamounts, now 3-5, shot a below average -1" percent from the floor and committed 22 turnovers. "Ii wasn't a pretty game, but we won and I'll take a win regardless of how we play. However, we are not going to win many with that kind of game." Conley added. The Catamount schedule does not get any easier in the next two weeks as they will meet unbeaten North Carolina A&T State here Saturday night then go on the road to Tennessee Tech (6-2) and C arson-New■nian(9-3). On the positive side. WCU's quickness was evident as they stole the ball away from Lenoir- Rhvne nine times and blocked DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDnDDDDDDDDDDD □ □ □ □ a a a □ a a a a a □ a D a □ a □ □ a □ □ □ a a a □ □ D □ □ □ □ □ □ □ □ T.D.'S NEWSSTAND NEWSPAPERS, PAPERBACKS, MAGAZINES, CIGARS, CIGARETTES WE HAVE THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER 7 DAYS A WEEK ALSO OPEN Moi-Sat Soiday Hon - 10pn 8am - 6pm LARGE SELECTIONS IF WE DON'T HAVE IT, WELL TRY TO GET ITI CALL US: 293-5100 PROFESSORS: LET US GET THOSE PAPERBACKS FOR YOUR CLASSES LOCATED BETWEEN THE CANTERBURY INN I SPEEDIES PIZZA 3DDDDDDDDDnnDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDnDD D D D a a a a □ a a D □ a a a a a □ a a □ a D □ □ a □ □ □ □ a a a D □ a a □ a □ eight shots. Conley praised the play of forward Jay Lassiter and guard Thomas Wilson. "No one stunk up the floor or played super, but Jay and Bubba did their jobs well." said Conley. lassiter, a 6'4" junior, scored 15 points and pulled in 11 rebounds and was credited with four steals. Wilson, a 6'3" sophomore, played his usual outstanding defensive game which caused the visitors to commit numerous turnovers. Mike Meadows led the scoring with 21 points and heads up a list ol five double-figured WCU scorers. The 6'5" senior forward is averaging 19.6 followed by Lee Gibbs with a 17.0 average; Ike Mims at 15.3; Wilson. 11.0; and Lassiter. 10.3, The Cats face an imposing task at home Saturday night when they host North Carolina A&T State, unbeaten (going into tonight's game with UNC- Charlotte) and is currently the nation's top ranked Black team. A&T, the defending MEAC champion and a NCAA Division I team, is led by 6'h" guard James Sparrow who is ranked among the nation's top ten major college scorers with a 26.6 average. The Aggies also have a rugged front line led by 6*10" Sinclair Colbert who is averaging 14.2 rebounds per game. "A&T will be one of the, if not THE most talented team we will lace this season, lt will be a great lest to see how far we have progressed since playing Auburn and NC State. They arc as physical as either of those teams," said Conley. "A lot of people think the tough teams are behind us like Auburn. Slate and Marshall, but there arc some real good ones ahead like A&T, Tennessee Tech, Carson-Newman, Roanoke and Fast Carolina, plus a return match with UT-Chattanooga. Nothing is going to be easy for us this season—we have already proven that," he added. State player shoots over WCU's Mike Meadows. That's right! The score does read WCU 36, NC State 31.
