Saturday £Ju%LamM r pf)BTC Superstars to compete here ABC Television has declined coverage, but Western Carolina University will still present its own version of The Superstars here Saturday. The First Annual WCU Superstars, designed after the television sports series, will feature two representatives from each of the University's men and women intercollegiate athletic teams in competition for team and individual awards. Some of the more familiar names competing will be foot ball standouts Allen Corpening and Gregg Walton; basketball stars Bubba Wilson and Lee Gibbs; two-sport star Wayne Tolleson representingthe baseball team; wrestler Mitch Burr; golfer David Roper; trackmen Randy Layman; soccer standout Fred Irving; and tennis captain Bill Rochester. The state's premier gymnast, Susan Bulloch, and all-state basketball player Brenda Johnson heads the list of women participants. Other female standouts scheduled to partici' pate are Judy Stroud (volleyball) and Anna Bolick (tennis). The event is being sponsoreo. and staged by the student-operated University Center Board. Competition will be divided into morning and afternoon sessions. The 100-yard dash, football distance throw, soccer kick, baseball accuracy and obstacle course run will be held at WCU's track and field facility, beginning at 10 a.m. Starting at 2 p.m. will be the swimming, bowling, basketball free-throw, weight lifting and bicycle competition, to be held in Reid Gymnasium. A team championship will be determined with the winning two-member unit receiving a plaque and the top three place finishers in each event will be awarded Olympic style medals. THURSDAY - SATURDAY CLINT EASTWOOD THUNDERBOLT and LIGHTF00T" S3 United Artists SUNDAY - TUESDAY BURT CYBILL REYNOLDS SHEPHERD PETER BOGDANOVIOTS As was the case last year, WCU will play a home football game before the opening of school when the Catamounts play host to East Tennessee State on September 130 Therefore, all pre-registered, fees paid students can pick up their fall quarter student athletic ticket (good for all 5 home football games and the two fall quarter home basketball games) at the student gate, adjacent to the field house at Whitmire Stadium, before kick- off on September 130 If you are pre-registered and have paid your fees, all you need to do in order to secure your student athletic ticket is to present a form of identification at the Student Gate on the evening of the game. Those students who are not pre-registered as of September 13, will have to purchase a regular ticket ($5.00) at the Student Gate to gain admittance to the East Tennessee State game.
