  • Page 2 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY APRIL 10, 1975 Candidates give platforms FROM PAGE 1 ^^^^ Mike "Painter" Killam, a student senator for three years and current business manager of The Western Carolinian, was the next presidential candidate to speak. Killam said SGA needed to "o- vercome the cliquishness it projects." He promised an SGA that is "efficient, effective, and intelligent." Killam insisted that student government should not have to act on the complaints of students, but should "be there fighting before the student, not after him." He said he knew his way around administrative circles, that "they can't give me the run-around, I know what they're talking about." Killam cited as the major areas of concern "Russ Stevens memos coming down our —>■ *. throats," poor campus security, a housing contract "so one-sided that it can't even be called a contract," and registration hassels that cause students who "can't walk fast and far enough to have to pay a late fee." The next presidential candidate, Joe Velton, an RA in Albright Hall, stated he was a new comer to SGA politics, but felt that was to his credit and not a disadvantage. "I'm willing to learn, to go through this whole process with the students and the student senate, who need to learn, too." Yelton said he has spent many hours in one-to-one conversations with students, and that he knows the problems they face. "I feel that the student voice has been completely neglected here at Western." he said. THRU SATURDAY - YeXPLODeS HELL Sunday in the Country /TAWT A/O PiCN'C! |llllllllMIIIIIIIIIMIIIIIIIII!lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, llll| STARTS SUNDAY My Name is Nobody miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiif Velton wants more student involvement in the govern- mentalprocess and in "everything that comes before the senate." He said this year's entertainment was "a joke," and that his lack of knowledge in SGA affairs wont slow things up if he is elected, because "It's slow enough already." Wardell Townsend, the fourth candidate for president, was unable to attend the forum, but was interviewed over the telephone by The Western Carolinian. Townsend said he is working in Murphy on a full- time internship for WCU's Psychology department. He said he would be in Cullowhee next week to conduct his campaign. Last year, Townsend, SGA's vice president at the time, was removed from the presidential ballot in a hotly disputed controversy. He said he doesn't anticipate any repeat this year because he fully meets all of the qualifications. Townsend's main emphasis is on centering SGA's concern on the student, "but with the whole community in mind." He said he will work on molding the university and the community into one. "Wemustchange our image within the community," he said. "We can't coexist seperately for ever." "There are so many resources here not being used," said Townsend. "The university is lazy—it's their job to come up with ideas. If I can and they don't, then something is slack." The first vice presidential candidate to speak at the forum was present SGA Attorney General Joe Digges, an unsuccessful candidate for the vice presidency the last two years. Diggs said "I think I'd do a good job at it, I've been in it long enough." He said SGA's "got the power to be a pretty viable thing here." Digges attacked WCU's registration process by saying it "takes as many people to run the computer as it did to run reg~ istration by hand 10 years ago." He promised "to look into the situation and see what the deal is with it."
