  • October 8. 1974 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE 3 Spotlight shines behind scene By Peggy Robertson 's><r n' An estimated 4000 people were entertained by Billy Preston in a performance that was by all means an electrifying experience. But is the selling of tickets and the presentation of the performer all that is envoived in a concert? Not by a long shot! Don Ramsey, director of Student Government Productions began preparing for the first concert of the year early in July by passing out surveys of what groups the majority of students would like to appear. In August, Ramsey was notified that Billy Preston would be available, Popularity surveys on Preston were taken around campus to secure the success of the concert, after which Reid Gymnasium was reserved. Contracts were then drawn up and a paper. called a "rider," containing provisions which must be met, was sent to Ramsey. Tickets were printed and the contract was signed and sealed. Engineers, electricians and a stage crew of seven men who travel with Billy Preston, were hired and were responsible for the assembling of the stage and equipment, making sure it met all the requirements stated in the rider. Four spotlight operators were hired, and of course, people were hired to clean the gymnasium after the concert. A lot of work, not often thought about, goes into a concert and without these people behind the scenes, Cullowhee would remain the same little dry town that it has been for years.
