March 29, 1973 AAUW Applications Open For Achievement The Cullowhee branch of the American Association of University Women has announced that applications are now being accepted for the AAUW Award for outstanding achievement by a Junior Woman. The award is designed to encourage women students to seek and accept positions of leadership in university and community life. Candidates must have Junior standing and a "B" a- verage academically. The award will include a minimum stipend of $100.00 and the winner for 1973 will be announced at the annual Awards Night program. The scholarship fund is being supported primarily by a used book sale which will be held in late April at the Student Center. Contributions will be accepted for used books, magazines, records and prints. Donations should be brought to the history department office in McKee building. Individual monetary contributions to the fund are also welcome. Application forms may be obtained from Barbara Mann, Dean of Student Development; Jeannie Grout, Secretary of the history dept., or Glenn Har- desty, director of Financial Aids. Deadline for applications is April 16, 1973. The Wild West Traveling Medicine Shown featuring the James Gang and Tempest Storm tfill perform here Wednesday, April 4 at 8:00 pm in Reid Gymnasium. WCU students with ID'S may purchase their tickets for a $1.00 at SGA offices from 1:00 to 4:00 starting April 2 and continuing through the 4th. General public tickets will be $2,00 a piece. Founded several years ago in Kent Ohio the James Gang's original members were Jim Fox, drums; Dale Peters,bass; and Joe Walsh on guitar. This edition of the group recorded four albums including the very popular "Rides Again" and "Thirds" lps, before Walsh left the group to pursue a solo career. Replacing Walsh was guitarist Don Troiano. Also joining the group at this time was vocalist Ray Kenner. Since then they have recorded two albums : ' 'Stra ight Shooter "and "Passin' Thru." The show also has "other acts of skill and daring." Paul LaCross is billed as the "World's Fastest, Fanciest Gunslinger, Knife, and Tome- hawk Thrower." His lighten ing quick six-gun draw has been timed with accuracy at 6/100th of a second. Komar the Mind Fokir will perform "unbelieveable feats of mind and body control." His act includes such tests of human endurance and fortitude as fire eating, leaping on nails with bare feet and sword walking. A Chinese magician will perform tricks "never before seen in this country." Completing the show is Tempest Storm who is known as the Queen of Burlesque. Her epithet speaks for itself. Phi Mu To Hike For Hope Phi Mu, a WCU sorority, is sponsoring their second annual Hike for Hope on Sunday, April 15th. It will begin in front of the A.K, Hinds University Center and end at Cherokee. Registration for the 15 mile hike begins at 9:00 a.m. that morning. A hiker must have at least one sponsor pledging a minimum of IOC a mile for each mile walked. The object is to get as many sponsors as possible to pay as large a price per mile as can be obtained. Participants do not have to complete the hike but will turn in an account of the portion wal'.ted to their sponsors. The sponsors then mail their contributions to the "Hike for Hope Fund," Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, Cullowhee. Last year's hike raised over $1800 for Project Hope. Project Hope is a self-help organization which sponsors a wide range of medical education programs at home and abroad. It trains the host country medical personnel to be self-sufficient. Hikers will receive a list of nine check points to be visited during the hike. Free refreshments and a ride back to Cullowhee will also be provided. Trophies will be awarded to four categories of those who raise the most money. They include: Best Soroity, Best Fraternity, Non-Greek Organization, and Individual.
