  • page 8 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday Jan. 18, 1973 Carolinian News Briefs FLU IS HERE The London flu has hit Western Carolina's campus in near epidemic proportions. But rumors that classes might be suspended due to the virus are unfounded, according to an infirmary official. However, till 30 beds in the infirmarj have been filled since Jan, II, and students wishing a bed have been turned away. A total of 335 students were treated on Jan, 15, Staff officials al the infirmary felt that the peak of the virus outbreak had been reached, Beds will be made available on the seventh floor of Scott lUill if it should be needed, according to Housing director Tyler Combs, The infirmary staff advises those persons with mild cases to take plenty of liquids and aspirin; more severe cases should report to the infirmary. ART WORKSHOP The Art Department at Western Carolina University, will initiate a Junior Art Workshop for high school students Jan, 22, The Junior Art Workshop will meet for two hours on Saturday mornings for ten . The program is planned for participation by students in grades 8-12, and it will meet in Room 294 of the Art Building on the Western Carolina University campus, Mj-, Ray Menze of the WCL art fcultj will be the instructor for this first Junior Art Workshop, Menze teaches art education at Western and is in the process of writing his doc toral dissertation at Florida State University, The Junior Art Workshop is designed to give high school students in the area experiences in drawing of all kinds; sketching with various media; painting with water color, tempera and collage; printmakingof various kinds; sculpture in a variety of media; and batik. Dr, Perry Kelly, head of the Art Department, said that art classes for other children in the region have been planned dependent upon the success and interest in this first workshop. Young persons interested in participating in the Saturday classes will be accepted on a first come - first served basis. Further information is available from the Art Department, COFFEE HOUSE The University Center Board is sponsoring a Coffee House this Friday from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am , It will be held in the Gold Room on the third floor of the University Center, Free refreshments will beset" ved, along with plenty of good entertainment, FIRE An electrical fire at Western Carolian University, Dec, 14th, destroyed two large transformers at an estimated loss of more than Si 0,000, The transformers were located outside at the rear of Scott residence hall. Damage was confined to the two units and power lines serving them. No damage occurred to the hall, but all electrical power in it was disrupted. Student development offices in the building were without power and personnel were working from another building. Electricians said they believed the fire originated from moisture condensation during heavy rains, Each of the transformers is a 225 KVA (kilo- volt ampheres) unit costing S4,- 000 when originally installed. The fire caused a temporary interruption of power to Camp Laboratory School. The fire was responded to by the Cullowhee Volunteer Fire Department, STUDY GRANT The State Advisory Council on Vocational Education has awarded a 815,000 contract to Western Carolina University Department of Sociology and Anthropology and Dr, Billy J, Franklin, department head, to conduct a statewide study of "Occupational Education as Seen by Occupational Education Instructors," The study will involve the collection of both factual and attitudinal data from teachers in various occupational education fields. Approximately 160 of the more than 3,000 occupational education instructors in the state will be interviewed and questionnaires will be mailed to 8,000 other instructors.
