  • 4 Tuesday, May 9, 1972 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Carolinian News Briefs ■ SPORTS CAR SLALOM The Second Annual University Center Board Sports Car Slalom will be held on May 17. It will be at 6:00 pm on the University Center Parking Lot Trophies will be awarded to the best time in each class out of three heats, and an overall trophy will be awarded,, All students entering the slalom must sign up at Room 130, University Center. There will be an entry fee of $1.00 or free with U.C. Card. The deadline for sign up will be 12:00 noon on May 17. Prejudice „ . . .FROM Page 1 Black music is played at this time on WCAT. The current format (schedule of songs to be played) allows little room for DJs to stray, but a certain amount of choice is left up to the individual DJ. The emphasis is placed on Top-40 music, and is rotated every week when new music comes in on the board. All of the station personnel questioned stated that the station does currently play 20-30 per cent Black-oriented music. Patton disagreed. The defense heard testimony from several members of the current Executive Board. Frank Wyatt, music director, told of the methods by which the station received its records. According to Wyatt, the station cannot obtain records by any other means except to receive promotional recordings from the record companies. Wyatt also explained that not all companies will service a college radio station with pro~ motional copy, and many others are difficult to get any response from at all. Former Business Manager, Brent Garvin, confirmed Wyatt by testifying to the fact that WCAT does not have sufficient appropriations to buy records, and therefore they must be obtained as promotional copy. William Howell, Music Director for next year, said that he did not classify music as being Black-inspired or non Black-inspired, but rather categorically (e.g.-progressive music). In previous action, Patton took his proposal before the Student Senate. The Senate referred it back to WCAT to be settled as an internal matter. The Executive Board of the station has suspended Patton from the station for thirty days for deliberately breaking format and going against station rules. Patton is not the first DJ to be suspended for such actions.
