Western Carolina head l»S" ketball coach Jim Hartbarger outlined three goals for the Catamounts earlier this season. They have realized one of them. Hartbarger said the Cats wanted to beat I NC-Ashevil!e. The two teams have me*, twice and Western has won both. And since UNC—A Is now in sivth place in the District, their chance of making the tournament in March is very slim. Hartbarger also said the Catamounts were shooting for a berth in the District 6 tournament. WCU is currently leading the race and with a win tonight against Voorhees Hart" barger's crew will need to win only one more district win to be assured of a playoff slot. But the last Catamount goal could be the toughest to realize—to win 20 games. Cur" rently the Cats are 15-11 with seven games left to play. Among those seven are the NALVs best field-goal shooting team, Barber Scotia. Tonight's game against the Voorhees Royal Tigers features Gregory Bamette, their jiunp- ing-jack 2'M pound pivotman. Barnette leads the district in scoring with a ^4-point average and pulled down 32 rebounds while firlig 4! points again it UNC—A 'ast week. Until the Cats win a; least two more district games, every league game will be very im portant. The Voorhees contest at 7:30 in Reid tonight will be no exception. It should be a much better performance than Tuesday's "near loss to Belmont Abbey, 83-78, Western opened the game swapping baskets with the Crusaders and then went to sleep. In a span of seven minutes, the visitors blasted the Cats outScoring them 20 to 4. That put WCU down by 15. At the half, the Catamounts still hadn't recovered and were down by six 37-43, Larry Grant sparked a WCU offensive in the second hall with 15 of his 17 team-leading points, but the Crusaiers kept things close on the play of Carl Bell. Bell, who is only a fresh man, had 25 points for the night and 18 rebounds. It was not until seven minutes left in the game that Western took the lead to stay, 65-63, and Belmont Abbey was still within two with a little over two minutes left. Dougherty is a 6'3", 232 pound native of Haddonfield, New Jersey. Ron Meyer, the Cowboys area talent scout,-handled the signing for Dallas and indicated that Dougherty would be attempting to make the Super Bowl champions as a linebacker. The Cowboys have a reputation for sign'ng free agents «ho eventually end up as regulars such as Cliff Harris, Dave Edivnrds, Ron East, Mike Gaechter,Cornell Green, Jethro Pugh and Dan Reeves. "I had contracts from three organizations to choose from, but I decided on the Cowboys because I suicerely believe they will give me a fair shake," explained Dougherty. "And, there is somethingabout getting a chance to play for a championship team," he added. Bob Waters, WCU's head coach, labels Dougherty "a great football player for the Catamounts. Jim is very dedicated and courageous. We really- hated to lose him." When asked about what he thought of Dougherty's chances of making the Cowboy's roster, Waters, a former NFL quarterback with the 49'ers, said "Jim is not very big as NFL linebackers go, but they must be looking for players at that position because they drafted five."
