  • Thursday, September 30, 1971 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 9 Cats face THE test in Jacksonville St. Cullowhee - "The meanest, most aggressive football team we will play this season," is the label Western Carolina's coach Bob Waters pins on his Catamounts' next opponent, Jacksonville State University of Alabama. The Catamounts, fresh from a 26-0 upset of previously unbeaten Appalachian State, will have very little time to enjoy their first victory of the season. "The Jacksonville State team of last season was the most vicious outfit we've ever faced here at Western," said Waters. "And , the defensive unit that intercepted 10 of our passes returns intact," he added. Jacksonville finished the '7J season with a perfect 10=0 record and Waters was not the only coach impressed by the hard hitting Gamecocks as they fin= ished second in the final NAIA poll and fourth in the AP small college rankings. JSU was rated No. 1 in the NAIA's preseason poll and lived up to this lofty billing last Saturday with a 57-0 rout of Southeast M issou • ri. Western came out of the Ap= palachian game in good physical condition with only two Players showing slight ailments —safety Alan Stubblefield has a sprained ankle and offensive tackle Doug Murajda developed an infection. The junior signal caller suffered a collar bone fracture in spring practice, and then cracked it again during the first week of pre-season drills. "Most of our people are back off the injury list and the future looks a lot brighter," says a happier Waters. "1 think we are progressing in the right directon. However, Saturday night will determine how much we have improved," The Catamounts' defensive unit led the way to victory last week as the usually potent offense sputtered. Tailback Otis Mcintosh appeared to have recovered from a pre-season injury as he set a new WCU career point record 068) with two scoresafpinst Appalachian, The Cats have been counting on the big play offense, usually the bomb to Jerry Gaines or Eagle Moss for points, and this weapon was missing last week.
