  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday. April 29. 1971 7 Two gone sweep sets stage - -f* for WCU-S.C State clash * * ' Western Carolina's baseball team may be on its way to a major milestone. No Catamount baseball team has ever made the NAIA four- team District Six playoffs, but WCU's sweep of the Mars Hill doubleheader here yesterday gives this year's edition a good chance. The Cats won 1-0 and 16-2 to push their season district record to 7-2, That places them in a tie with South Carolina State for second place. Appalachian is riding along In the number one slot with a spotless 7-0 record. Erskine's Flying Fleet is fourth with a 5-2 mark. Today the Catamounts are at Orangeburg, S.C. for a show« down battle with S.C. State. WCU won an earlier encounter 3-0 here in Cullowhee, The winner of today's game wiU be firmly established in second. If Western should win against S.C, State, and then win both or split with ASU and Erskine, the Cats only other district opponents remaining, they would be assured of a playoff berth in the May 13, 14, and 15 tournament. In yesterday's action, the first game against the Mars Hill Lions turned into an all- out pitching dual featuring freshman Don Bright for WCU and Charlie Baxter for Mars Hill. The opening game was slated to go only seven innings9 but neither team could push across a run until the tenth. Both pitchers went the entire distance. Baxter combined with a heads-up defensive effort on the part of the Lions stymied the Western plate attack for most of the game. WCU had eight hits, but also lost four base runners on pick- offs while attempting to steal second. Bright was just as deadly to the Mars Hill batters. He struck out 15 including the last five Lions to approach the plate. He allowed only 3 Mars Hill hits. Aiding his own cause, Bright singled with two away in the bottom of the tenth to set up the game winning score. Gene Bowles relieved Bright at the first sack as a courtesy runner and then came home Jbd LEADING THE NATION— Tommy Hayes, WCU's starting centerfielder, wears uniform *1. How true It is. Hayes leads the NAIA in doubles and is the only Western player ever to lead in an individual category nationally. when Tommy rayes looped a hit to center field. The second game was a to • tally different affair as the Catamounts exploded for 19 hits in support of Glenn Glover's five shutout innings. Glover left in the sixth inning leading 16-2 and was re Placed by Noland Smathers. The win boosted Glover's re ■ cord to 5-0 this season-the best on the WCU staff. Western scored one in the first with the big blow being Ron Wall's triple, and then smacked four more home In the second highlighted by a Bruce West triple. Wall, West and Whitworth each collected three hits each to lead the WCU offensive. Hayes and Jim Grove had two hits apiece. On Saturday, Western will be in Atlanta for a game with awesome Georgia Tech, The Yellowjackets are 23-2 thus far and boast four pitchers with a 1.56 or less ER\. Five of the Tech pitchers are undefeated this season.
