  • Cats run over PC 28-21 Mcintosh sets WCU record THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN, October 20,19703 Western Carolina University's Catamounts began their "second season" last Saturday night with a special 28-21 win over the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. It was a special win for a number of reasons—one, the Blue Hose ended the Cats nine- game win streak last season with a startling 28-17 upset win that knocked the Cats out of their NAIA playoff berth; two, it ended a three-game WCU losing streak this season; three, Presbyterian is the alma mater of WCU head coach Bob Waters, The Catamounts came back to win the contest from a 14-7 halftime deficit on the running of tailback Otis Mcintosh, the passing of quarterback Hal Mote and a 51-yard touchdown run by senior Paul Smith. Mcintosh led the WCU offense in record breaking style. He set a WCU rushing record for the most rushing attempts as carried the ball 45 times for 161yards and three touchdowns. The old mark was held by former Catamount fullback David Lomax who carried the ball 34 times against Appalachian State in 196 6„ Mcintosh also tied the WCU record for the most TD's in a single game with his three against Presbyterian. Another WCU record was tied as toe Catamounts ran the ball 69 tames. That equalled the old record set in 1968 asains+r.,.;i ford of 69 rushing attempts, Every touchdown scored in the game was by rushing. Presbyterian scored first late in the first quarter on a one yard run by halfback Tom M;lton. PC's Jerry Chandler added the PAT with the clock stopped at 5:13 and Presbyterian took a 7-0 lead, WCU came back to tie the score at 7-7 with a one-yard TD run by Mcintosh and Jimm y Corley's PAT with 12:15 left in >k**h»ha!£,?S,_Alle" McNeill took the ball four yards on a quarterback-keeper and Chandler added the PAT, At 8:47 in the second quarter, Mcintosh again scored for WC U, and with another PAT by Corley the score was 14-14, The touchdown \as WCU's first score in the third quarter of the 1970 season. The teams then exchanged TD's as WCU's Mcintosh ran 4 yards off tackle for his third score of the night, Corley's PAT came at 14:48 in the fourth quarter. Presbyterian tied it again with 5:06 remaining into'? game when Milton again tallied with a 3 yard scoring runs and Chandler's PAT, The final and winning score was a thriller. With 3:26 left in the game and the score tied at 21 all, WCU catback Paul Smith took a pitch=out from Q3 Hal Mote on WCU's own 49 and raced 51 yards to score. Corley's PAT boosted the winning margin from six to seven points, WCU hsadcoach, Bob Wuters, was especially happy to beat his alma mater but, not impressed with his team's performance. "Wo are always happy to wui--that's the name af the game. However, our play must improve over Saturday night's performance to beat any of our remaining opponents," Waters stated in a concerned voice. "Our offensive and defensive units played enthusiastically but not wall," he added. The Catamounts got another steady performance from their own quarterback, Hal Mote, It was the Marietta, Ga. sophomore's second complete game of the season and he responded with 109 yards pissing on 8 completions in 15 attempts and picked up a crucial first down with a seven yard run on a fourth dow:i situation. Mote completed 18 of 35 passes for 301 yards passing since taking over as the Catamounts signal caller two weeks ago, WCU, now 2-3, plays its last road game Saturday night in Hickory, N. C. with Lenoir ■ Rhyne and its explosive single- wing offense, The Bears are one of Western's oldest and most feared rivals. LR started slowly this season but has won its last three for a 4-2 record. Senior catback Paul Smith, using much the same form as he is pictured above, took a pitch-out from WCU quarterback Hal Mote and raced 51 yards for the winning score against Presbyterian last Saturday night, Homecoming tickets still on sale Harriers win West Georgia meet by Frank Wyatt Western Carolina's Cross Country Team ran with success at the West Georgia Invitational Mijet, Saturday, Oct= ober 17, and returned to Cullowhee with the first place trophy. The meet was held on West Georgia's four mile course in Carrollton, Georgia. The nine-team meet con= sisted of seventy-five distance runners representing schools from North Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia. After four miles of hard competition, the event ended with the WCU team in first place with 34 points. Second place was taken by West Georgia College who had 78 points. Then came Troy State University in third with 90 points, Berry College fourth with 94 points, High Point College fifth with 107, and Jacksonville State University, West Georgia Striders Track Team, Georgia Southern College, andArmstrongCollege filling the last four positions in that order. In addition to the first place team trophy, Terry Helms, Ben Bailey, and Tom Gibbons each won individual trophies for finishing in the top ten. Helms, a junior from Kan- napolis, N. C., turned in a winning time of 20:27 which was sixty three seconds better thar the old record. Two Cat amounts, Ben Bailey (20:50), the freshman sensation from Enka, N. C. , and Charlotte's Tom Gibbons (2I:05),alsobro!te the old course record of 21:30, Eddie Perry, a Clinton, S. C. senior, managed to tie the former record time. Bailey got off to a bad start when he was stepped on, causing him to lose a shoe and thirty seconds to the rest of the pack while he retied. Nevertheless, he put on a great charge in the last mile to finish third. Gibbons came in fifth, Perry, eleventh, with Mike Blake (21:43), sixteenth, Mike Davis (21:56), eighteenth, and Jerry Greene (22:12), twenty- second, to round out the Western Carolina team. "It was a real good team effort," said WCU Coach Roger Thomas, "and the entire meet was very well run." The WCU team went into the meet with a 2-3 record, having defeated Furman and Davidson, while having lost to the University of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Tennessee Tech. By virtue of the West Georgia Invitational victory over eight teams, the Catamount Harriers boosted their record to a strong 10-3. On October 24, next Saturday, WCU will be at Appalachian for a dual meet with the Mountaineers. The WCU Athletic Depart- in ent has announced that there are still tickets available for the Western Carolina-Elon homecoming game on Oct. 31. There have been several reported rumors that the game is sold out, This is not the case however. Tickets are on sale Monday through Friday from eight until one in the afternoon at the Athletic Director's office, Reid Gymnasium. In addition to homecoming tickets, there are still many good seats for WCU's home games with Concordia (Nov.14), and Guilford (Nov. 21). Reserved seats are $3.00 each, and general admission tickets are $2.00. PAUL * E. COWAN, Representative JR. For friendly professional service on aU your Insurance needs.
