  • Page 4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN January 20,1970 Deal Hiies appointed to position The newly created position of Assistant Dean of Admissions has been filled by the appointment of Mr. Dean Hlnes. This new position has been made necessary by the increasing a- mount of applications for admission to WCU that arrive every day. Mr. Hines, who will assist Tyree H. Kiser, entered Western Carolina CoUege in 1964. While he attended Western, Mr. Hines was active in the Student Senate, performed at sports events as a cheerleader, and was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He served as President of his fraternity for one year. He taught at Asheville's David Miller, Junior High one year and later for one year at C lax- ton, Georgia. He returned to Western to graduate in the summer of 1969 with an A. B. degree in English and a Biology concentration. Mr. Hines is originally from Daytona Beach, Florida, but presently resides in Waynesville. He is married to the former Miss Bo Prevost, a graduate of Brenau. When he isn't occupied with his duties as Assistant of Admissions, Mr. Hines enjoys a few holes of golf. Delta Psi holds organizational meeting Thurs. An organizational meeting of Delta Psi Service Sorority, a local organization which hopes to provide service to the campus and to the handicapped a- cross the state and nation, will be held Thursday, January 22, at 7:30 p. nu in the fourth floor lounge of Leatherwood Dormitory. The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss the constitution of the organization prior to sending it to the Senate for approval and to elect a partial slate of officers. This is a non-Greek service sorority. Any female student is eligible to pledge. All Greek and non-Greek women are invited. Any student Interested in gaining information about pledging Delta Psi Service Sorority is urged to attend this organizational meeting, as it is hoped that a tenative list of charter members can be obtained. The fall quarter pledges of the Epsilon Gamma Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta sorority are: First row, left to right: Connie Price, Carol Minton, Sherri Weaver, Elizabeth Gee, Shari Coble, Jackie Dense. Political Science Dept. established A Department of Political Science at Western Carolina University has been established in the School of Arts and Sciences under the leadership of Dean J. G. Eller, it has been announced by Dr. W. Newton Turner, vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Salvatore D. Nerboso, who joined the WCU faculty in 1968 as professor of political science, has been named by Dr. Eller to head the new department . Dr. Nerboso has already assumed his new duties. The department's enrollment includes 70 students currently majoring in political science, and during the last academic year approximately 900 students received instruction in political science courses. This year, the department has formed 33 courses covering all major areas of discipline, including American government and politics, foreign governments, international relations, constitutional law, public administration, and political theory. Dr. Nerboso received his baccalaureate degree from the University of New Hampshire. He received master's degrees from George Washington University and Harvard, and received the Ph. D. degree from Harvard in 1950. Five other persons have been named to the faculty of the new department. They are: Chan- ning C. Carpenter, assistant professor; William R. Latimer, assistant professor; Dr. Charles J. Stevens, assistant professor; Andrew H. Baggs, assistant professor; and Mrs. Judith H. Carpenter, instructor. Carpenter has been a member of the WCU faculty since 1967. He received his bachelor's degree from Doane College and a master of arts degree from the University of Nebraska. Latimer, now on leave of absense while working with the U. S. Department of State, has taught at WCU since 1964. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Siena College and the master of arts degree from the University of Wisconsin. Mrs. Carpenter received the bachelor of arts and master of science degrees in political science from Kansas State College. Formerly, she taught in the Jackson County public school system. Before joining the WCU faculty, Baggs taught at the University of Florida, from which he holds the bachelor's* and master's degrees. Dr. Stevens formerly taught at The Citadel. He received the bachelor of arts degree from Ursinus College and the master's degree and the Ph.D„ degree from Duke University. ! Alpha Kappa Psi The Theta Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business fraternity, will hold its winter Smoker in Reynolds Parlor, Wednesday, January 21, from 7:00 to 9:00. AU Sophomore and Junior business majors are invited. Briefs Nursing majors All nursing majors are required to meet at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, in the KUlian Clinic Annex No. 126 (Uving room across from the Department of Nursing Office). This will be an organizational meeting with special speakers from the North Carolina Student Nurses Association. Attendance is expected of all nursing majors. Ski Club There will be a Ski Club meeting Thursday, January 22, at 7:30 p.m. in StUlwell 309. AU interested persons are invited to attend. The local chapter of Alpha Kappa Phi became a national chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi. "The chapter name will be Theta Tau. Alpha Kappa Psi is the largest and oldest Professional Business Fraternity in the United States. It was founded in 1904 at New York University. The installation team arrived early Sunday morning at the Asheville Airport, and were driven to the campus by members of Theta Tau. After the instaUation a banquet was held in the Grand Ballroom. Speakers at the banquet were Mr. Edwin Feulner from Washington, D„ C, Mr. Frank Brye, from Indianapolis, Indiana, Mr. L. D. Hyde, representative from the President's office, and Dr. L. A. Drewry, Dean of the School of Business. Other members of the instaUation team were Mr. Philip K. Price, Mr. Stephen Lipson, Mr. Michael Waltz, and presidents of various Alpha Kappa Psi chapters in the east. Distinguished guests attending the banquet were Dean Davis and his wife, Dr. Hubert Stepp, and Mr. Raymond Nelson. IRC holds meeting on MSMUN On Tuesday, January 20th, the International Relations Club will hold a meeting for all those Interested in attending the 1970 MSMUN in Washington. D. C., March 4th thru 8th. The meeting will be held in McKee U8 at 6 o'clock. As many remember, last year's MSMUN was hosted by W.C.U., and although it wiU be in Washington this year, delegations will be formed to attend. George Washington University is the host school for 1970. Anyone interested in the Model UN is invited to attend the meeting.
