WCU Cagers Hit Comeback Trail Tonight Against Eagles Jim Hartbarger's youthful Western Carolina cagers opened toeir season prior to Thanksgiving with a 109-81 romp over Piedmont in Rtjid gym. Former high school All-America Larry 'Go-Go' Grant and senior forward Gene McConnell each pumped in 20 points to lead the well-balanced Cats. But memories of toe first victory lasted only until last weekend when toe Cats went to foreign Elon College for the Christian's Tournament, Western faced Elon on opening night and after holding a 46-45 halftime lead, went cold in the second half and dropped toeir first game 100-86. McConnell again led toe scorers wito 20 points and was followed closely by Willard Kendrick wito 16 and guard Woody Wright wito 15. Saturday night against Catawba was more of the same, but this time a bit more frustrating for Hartbarger's charges. Trailing 44-36 at the half, toe Cats rallied behind Kendrick and Mai Brown only to drop a heartbreaking 78-77 contest WCU shot 19 of 28 from toe free throw line to add to toe woes. The Catamounts faced their stiffest test of the young season Monday night in Greenville against powerful East Carolina University. Western fell behind from the start and trailed at the half 63-33. In toe first quarter, East Carolina piled up 26 points while holding the Cats to only 11. Western's offense continued to sputter in toe second period as toey were outscored 37-21. Sporting a record of 1-3 toe Cats hit the comeback trail tonight in Jefferson City, Tennessee against toe tough Carson- Newman, The Eagles, recent winners of the Southern Tourney held last weekend in Ken- tucky, will be another very stiff test for toe freshman laden Cats. The starting line-up for Western Carolina will probably remain toe same wito Wright and Grant at toe guards, Kendrick and McConnell at toe forwards and lanky Paul Litz at center. Grant has been toe ball handling spark-plug for toe Cats so far. His behind-toe-back passes and accurate shooting, along wito consistent scoring by McConnell has made up the WCU offense. Meanwhile, Western went to work this week on man-to-man defense wito Hartbarger drilling Wednesday to tighten up a leaky defense toat has given up a total of 361 points in four games, an average of 90.1 points per game. That's how Western Carolina's newest superstar-in-toe- making sums up the difference between high school and college basketball. His name is Larry "Go-Go" Grant and he should know something about high school basketball. At Asheville Lee Edwards High last season, Grant was an All-America. Working under Coach Ted Carter, Grant led his team to the finals of the Gtate 4-A Championships. They ware upended toere by Winston- Salem Atkins by one point, 72-71. Among other honors Grant was voted Most Valuable Player in toe State Finals, All-State, and toe Jaycee Player of the Year in 1968. As a member of Western Carolina's Catamounts, Grant has a big image to keep up. When the Cats took toe floor for warm-ups against Piedmont College the image was readable. On toe back of his warm-up jacket were toe words GO-GO GRANT. His first collegiate game was only 40 seconds old when Go- Go did his thing. On a jump shot from toe key, Grant scored the first two points of the season for the Catamounts. By the end of toe Catamount 109- 81 victory Grant had twenty points—5 of 7 fieldgoals and 10 of 13 free throws. He led the Catamount fast- back all night and when head coach Jim Hartbarger took him out late In the final period he got a standing ovation along with freshman teammate Willard Kendrick, not a bad start for a freshman playing varsity. Grant talked about the game this way—"I wasn't very nervous because I had talked myself into believing that it was just another high school game. I really felt myself and the fans enthusiasm helped a lot They kept boosting me . . making me want to go a little harder. The other guys were d^ing a great job of getting toe ball off toe board to make the fast break work, It felt great" College basketball is a new ballgame, Grant says. "In high school, toe guards were slower and I could reach for toe ball on defense, 111 have to break myself of that habit In colleges toe guards are much faster and much more alert If I reach for toe ball, they drive around me. The thing I have got to learn to stop toat is to keep my hands in close and to stay in front of my man. "On offense, the guys are taller and quicker.
