  • Page 4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Tuesday, February 25,1969 WCU Wrestlers Take Down Campbell 22-13 By KEN BALL WCU's Wrestlers traveled to Buies Creek, N. C. and handed Campbell College a decisive 22-13 defeat Saturday afternoon. This was the third victory for Western Carolina's matmen, giving them a 3-4 record for the season. Coach Bob Setzer and all his wrestlers deserve special praise. They came very close to having a winning season, not that a 3-4 record isnt an outstanding achievement, considering that this is the first time Western has boasted a wrestling team in 17 years. WCU had two pins and one decision over the Camels, while Campbell had only two pins and one decision. Ken Erickson, a 191 lb. freshman, started the action off for Western Carolina bypinninghis Smith, Durante Bottle For Scoring Lead In CC For the first time In more than two years there is a true battle for the individual scoring championship in the Carolinas Conference. David Smith, Guilford's 6-8 freshman center, moved into the battle with season-long leader Dwight Durante of Catawba by scoring 83 points In three games last week. Smith is now averaging 24.6 points a game and is less than two points below Durante's 26.2 norm. Smith may have begun his charge too late because only one week of the regular season and the tournaments remain to be figured in the statistics. Last year Henry Logan of Western Carolina easily outdistanced Durante for the scoring title. Logan averaged 36.2 to 28.3 for Durante. Logan also won the title in 1967 after battling Durante for the first half of the year. Durante was suspended for the last part of the season, and was Ineligible for consideration for scoring honors. Gene Littles of High Point has also increased his point production. Littles, who is third in scoring, Is hitting 23.2 points a game. Smith and Richard McGeorge of Elon are currently on top in the dogfight for the lead in field goal accuracy. Smith has made 199 of 330 attempts Doug Starnes Signs Grant With Western Doug Starnes, and honorable mention all-state tackle at West Mecklenburg High School, Thursday signed an athletic grant-in-aid with Western Carolina University. Starnes, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Pruett, was named to the all-county teams of the Charlotte Observer and the Charlotte News and received honorable mention all-state honors for Coach Clyde Peek. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Starnes recently was named to the West squad for the upcoming East-West All Star game. "Doug is one of the finest high school linemen in the Charlotte area and in North Carolina," said Don Powers, Western Carolina freshman team coach. "He was sought by many colleges and we are extremely happy that he decided to come to Western Carolina. Doug is capable of playing at almost any school. He should be an intregal part of our building process at Western Carolina," Powers said. Starnes will play either guard, tackle or linebacker for the Catamounts, Powers said. for 60.3 percent, and McGeorge has hit 152 of 252 for 60.1 per cent Clifton Black of Atlantic Christian is a close third with 59.1 per cent Garland Davis of Catawba has seen his rebounding average slip slightly in the last few weeks, but he still is far a- head of his closest challenger. Davis is picking off 19.2 rebounds a game as compared to 15.1 by smith and 14.9 by Jim Picka of High Point High Point's Danny Witt is the No. 1 free throw shooter with a percentage of 85.7 on 60 of 70 attempts. Bill Bowes of Elon is second with 83.1. opponent in an exhibition match. Erickson shows promise as an outstanding wrestler In the future for WCU. In his first season as a freshman, Ken has only lost one match. He wrestled two matches as a heavyweight 0 Wrestling in the 123 lb. division, Wayne Bracked completely outclasses his opponent Lenny Buford, and won on a decision 9-0. Then, Campbell came back to get ten points as they had two pins in a row. Wrestling for the first time as 130 pounder, Lang Kerr was pinned in the third period by Buddy Godfrey. In the 137 lb division, Barry Hayes had one of the toughest matches of the day. Barry was pinned by James Taylor, a blind student at CampbelL Being blind is not so great a handicap for a wrestler who depends a great deal upon his sense of feeling and balance. Taylor is a fine example of this. He is one of the better 137 lb. wrestlers in the area. This ended Campbell's scoring for the next four matches. Larry Hales collected a total of 5 min. 43 sec. riding time as he defeated Skip Distel 5-0. Steve Nelson had a close match, but came out ahead of James Fisher 7-5. Steve is second on Western's team In total number of points this sea son. He has only lost one match. Rob Bock wrestled In one of the most exciting matches of the day against Bill Sansone. Both men were closely matched, but it looked as if Campbell would win until late in the third period. Bock was behind three points when he put forth a burst of energy and quickly got an escape and a reverse for four points to win 9-8. Neither man was given points for riding time because there was only .08 seconds difference in the times. Ron Keller had the upper hand all the way in his match against John Weaver In the third period. Ron overpowered Weaver to pin him at the end of four minutes of wrestling. Dave Baker wrestled a superior match over his opponent, but still lost on a decision. At this point, the score was 17-13 In favor of WCU. In order to win, Campbell's heavyweight would have had to pinned WCU's Ron Cobbledick. Ron put the match away for Western In only one minute, 50 seconds. As soon as Campbell's Doug Cowin closed with Cobbledick in the first period, Ron threw a bear hug on him and took the man straight to the mat for a pin. This victory finished the season for Ron giving him an undefeated record for the season. The future looks bright for wrestling at WCU, especially since no one will be lost from this season's team, and they will have a year's valuable experience behind them going Into the season next year.
