  • Tuesday, October 24, 1967 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN WCU Carolettes Are Marching In Strong Numbers This Year Page 3 By SHARON ELLERBE That shimmer of silver seen on the football field during half- time performances of many Western Carolina University football games is not a mirage, spectators! It's Western Carolina's own Carolettes. The Carolettes are a marching team composed of 20 WCU coeds under the direction of Mrs. June Benson, assistant professor of Health and Physical Education at Western. Carolette tryouts are held fall and winter quarters. Girls are routine and went to Raleigh where they performed their routine three time instead of once. This was because there was a delay in Johnson's arrivaL So, to the tune of "Hello Dolly" and "Hey Look Mi Cher" the Carolettes went through the same routine three times. Western's Carolettes was the only group allow?d on the presidential platform. This yea.- the Carolettes will perform at the Western-Elon game at Burlington, which is Elon's Homecoming. They will also be seen at the Western- Mars Hill game at Cullowhee on Nov. 5. Basketball season will find an active Carolette group at home ballgames. The 1967-68 Carolettes are Sharon Glance, Gail Ratledge, Elizabeth Chamberlain, Jo Adams, Gail Bradshaw, Pam Chastain, Jane Coward, Sue Hill, Pollyann Holcomb, Joan Howard, Diane Koon, Gloria Lipscomb, Cora Lynn Lynch, Myra Miller, Sandra Price, Carolyn Shope, CharleneSmith, Linda Snipes, Jane Vavruska, and Sherry Whitley. StCttOK Vietnam From page 2 "The issue is not Vietnam. The issue that is at stake is all of Asia. What is needed is an orderly Asia rather than a forced Asia," He posed the question, "Should wc wait and let countries be destroyed or take precautions such as the ones we are taking in Vietnam?" "Until we have a better answer, wo will use the tactics employed in Europe after World War II and see if they will fit in Asia." *The sooner Asians can structure a new stability themselves the better off they will be, We are there to see that they are allowed to establish this stability. »> The young Wyoming Senator concluded by saying that wars are never waged for peace. They a-e waged to win a chance to set to work on fashioning a lasting peace. Convention . . . They march to music and do a simple routine with and without music which is taught to them the day tryouts are h3ld. The Carolettes originated at Western Carolina four years ago by Mrs. Benson. They emerged from a similar group which Mia. Beason began in 19bl. However, because of conflicts and lack of funds, the original group had to be discontinued. There was a two- year lapse of time between the short-lived original group and the present well-known Carolettes. In 1963, the Carolettes were invited by the Democratic Headquarters in Raleigh to perform for an LBJ presidential rally. The invitation came by way of a telephone call from the Raleigh Democratic Headquarters to Mrs. Benson on a Thursday afternoon in October. The group, then in its first year, had just been elected the day before. The following Tuesday they were to perform a three-minute routine at the rally. With much hard work and many long hours of practice, the Carolettes worked up their CLYDE'S RESTAURANT Where Tie Borne fblks Fat , Waynesville, N. C.
