  • Thursday, September 21, 1967 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 7 Cross CountryAnd Trock Programs Launched At WCU By DOUG SEBRING The latest addition to the varsity athletic program of Wistern Carolina University is the newly organized cross country team. A. H Whittle, Jr., who recently obtained his Master's Degree from the University of North Carolina, begins his coaching career as the cross country mentor. Whittle will also coach WCU's first track team in the spring. Since coming to C illowhee, the young Whitesides, Lewis Are Cats Of The Week Larry Whitesides and Ken Lewis, two outstanding performers in the Catamount victory over Carson-Newman last Saturday, have been selected by their teammates as the season's first Cats of the Week. Representing the offensive unit and dubbed "the Go Go Cat", Whitesides led the Catamount attack against Carson- Newman The 5'11", 180 pound tailback from Edneyville, N.C, carried the ballfor 72 years in 18 carries and averaged 4.0 yards per carry. The rugged sophomore displayed power and second effort determination as he reeled off several fine runs through the Carson-Newman defense. Major penalties nullified several of his best efforts in the first half. Larry Whitesides Ken Lewi: Whitesides also turned in a good performance as a defensive safety. Another two way player, Lewis, a 6'2", 208 pound stalwart at offensive tackle and defensive guard who earned the defensive award, the "Bad Cat" The senior veteran from East Point Georgia was a key player in the "Cat" defense which held Carson-Newman to only 30 yeards rushing and repeatedly dumped Eagle backs for 65 yards in losses. Lewis, an All-Conference and All Area selection in 1965 and 1966, recovered a fumble, made several key tackles and assisted on others. Rated as a potential All-American, Lewis also serves as a Catamount tri-captain and is a "vital cog" in the Catamount line. CAT TRACKS .... From page 6 partment which has taken a big step toward big time university athletics and the hope that they will keep right on climbing. coach has "been favorably impressed with the school, faculty, and students." There has been a good turnout of cross country candidates with about twenty runners now practicing. Although practice has begun, the season is young and any male student who is interested in participating on the team should contact Whittle at Reid Gymnasium. #0 IlipPm w^5 ▲, Heath Whittle The opening meet for the team Is slated for this Saturday here with Asheville-Biltmore. The four mile course will include a starting and finish point on campus, country roads, open fields and rugged terraine. Runners who may compete against A-B this Saturday in- clude Larrv Adams. C.L Cody, Mike Deese, Joe, Green, David Grissom, Paul Jones, Jar'i Hansel, David Huffman, and David Huskins. John Pecord, Donald Poole, Ronald Poole, Hayes Powell, Mike Roane, Doug Sebring, Rusty Wright, Jerry Trokler, and Tommy Shoemaker. In addition to the A-B meet, the cross-country team will face Appalachian and Mars Hill respectively in two later meets here. The outlook for the spring track season is g-.iod and Whittle feels that the "Cats" will field a respectable team in their maiden season No track meets, however, will be held at WCU since the planned track has not yet been constructed.
