Rabbit season opened Nov. 19 and will close Feb. 18. The hunting of Cotton Tails is not very probable for college students except during holidays and weekends since dogs are usually required to chase the rabbits into the open for a shot Still, there are rabbits around Western Carolina College and the season is open. Cornfields, ditch banks and honeysuckle patches have proved to be the best places for rabbits during rough weather. Wading through such areas produces some fast shooting for the sportsman who does not mind hunting without a dog. Quail and grouse seem to be abundant this year in our end of the state. This is another sport that usually requires the use of dogs, but quail and grouse can be jumped by the hunter walking through corn, grain or weed fields. Open woods around such fields are good cover for grouse. Quail season closes Feb. 18 while grouse season is open until Feb. 28. Fall, the traditional hunting season, is past, but the seasons for plenty of game are still open. The outdoorsman still has something to legally aim his gun at until the last of Feb.
