  • 1966 Christmas Edition Pi Kappa Phi Initiated Nationally On Dec. 10 With ceremonies lasting five days, Kappa Phi Colony of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity was initiated as Gamma Epsilon Chapter the weekend of Nov. 11. Formally the local fraternity Lambda Sigma Nu, Gamma Ep= siion Chapter was inducted as Kappa Phi Colony Jan. 24,1966. Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity was founded Ded. 10, 1904, as the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina—the oldest municipal college in the U.S.— by Simon Fograty, L. Harry Mixon, and Andrew Kro= ege, Jr. Three years after its founding Pi Kappa Phi was incorporated as a National Fra= ternity and proved its new status by initiating Beta Chapter at Presbyterian College of South Carolina, and Gamma Chapter at the University of California at Berkly. Not wanting to become a large national frater= nity, Pi Kappa Phi has initiated only fifty seven chapters across the United States in the sixty-two years since it was founded. Chapters in this state include Epsilon at Davidson College, Kappa at the University of North Carolina, Mu at Duke University, Tau at North Carolina State University, Beta Phi at East Carolina College, and now, Gamma Epsilon at Western Carolina College. The initiation began after dinner together Thursday evening at a formal meeting with Dur= wood Owen, Executive Secretary of Pi Kappa Phi, in which the first three hours of Chapter testing were taken. Friday afternoon at three o'clock the remaining two hours of testing were given and then the initiating officer, Ted Scharfen- stein, was introduced along with the initiating teams from Beta Psi Chapter at Tennessee Wesleyan College and Beta Omega chapter at East Tennessee State University. The formal ritual of the initiation ceremony began at eight o'clock Friday night at the College Campsight and was concluded at two o'clock Saturday morning. An initiation banquet was given Saturday night at the Copper Kettle in Maggie Valley for the new initiates and their guests. After dinner the Charter for Gamma Epsilon Chapter was presented to Mr, Bill Meuller, first president of Lambda Sigma Nu, and Dr. Paul A. Reid, president of Western Carolina College. The guest speaker of the evening was James R. Golden, National Historian of Pi Kappa Phi, Guests from the campus were: Dr. Paul A, Reid, president of the college, Mr. Frank Brown, vice-president of the college, Dr. Newton W, Turner, Mr. Frank J. S, Maturo, Mr. Roger Euliss, president of Delta Sigma Phi, Mr. Glenn Goss, representative of Pi Kappa Alpha, Mr. Ken Gibbons, president of Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Mr. Barry Johnson, president of the Inter-Fraternity Council. Highlighting the initiation Sunday afternoon was a reception heid in Dodson Cafeteria at which gifts from the National Office were displayed along with gifts of flowers from Sigma Kappa Sorority and Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. The initiation was closed with a formal meeting Monday night in which the Committee for Initiation of Gamma Epsilon Chapter was disolved and Gamma Epsilon was declared a chapter. Fortune Telling: A Fast Growing Pastime "...You probably will do a great deal of traveling, though this should be a pastime with you. In everyday work ycu should remain located in one place, lest you be tempted to become a rolling stone...In love you will tend to conceal your affections...In money matters you will have to curb your generosity... Whatever your faults, however, you wil! never lack for true friends, who will overlook every shortcoming out of genuine affection for you..." Under what sign of the Zodiac were you born? If you don't know, teen tee chances are likely teat you're missing out on a lot of inside information about yourself which could greatly change the direction of your life. But the chances are very likely, if you don't know your sign, teat you're saving yourself a lot of worry and sleep. The Zodiac is tee pathway in tee sky through which the sun and the planets appear to move. In ancient times sages and seers divided this pathway into twelve sections, or signs, and gave each a name. In tee course of tee year the sun moves through each of these signs in turn. The common belief is that one's life is destined from birth, depending upon which day and month you were born in. Many people adhere to this belief religiously, while fortune tellers thrive on it. If you are a believer in the signs of the Zodiac, then you THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN TKE Known As Knights Of Classic Lore On January 10, 1899, five men met in an apartment building at Illinois Wesleyan University. The purpose of this meeting was to form a group of men with the same basic moral ideals, a search for brother-hood, and a desire for greater scholastic attainment. The original name of this group was the Knights of Classic Lore. This humble beginning was tee birth of a new fraternity. In 1902, the name of this group was changed to Tau Kappa Epsilon. As the ideals and beliefs of this fraternity became known, more and more college men became aware of this fast-growing group of men. This growth has continued until today, Tau Kappa Epsilon is the largest farternity in tee world, chapter wise. It also has tee distinction of being an international fraternity, since tee installation of Zeta-Iota chapter at tee University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada in March, 1958. The flower of Tau Kappa Epsilon is the red carnation, the jewel is the pearl, and the colors are cherry and gray. Some nationally known Tekes include such names as Ronald Reagan, governor-elect of California; actor Danny Thomas; and hotel tycoon Conrad Hilton, Tau Kappa Epsilon came to the campus of Western Caroline College on April 4, 1959, when a local fraternity, Lambda Phi Kappa, was granted a charter from the Grand Council of TKE. With the installation of W.C.C.'s Zeta-Omicron chapter, which was the 159th chapter, TKE became the largest national fraternity. This is a distinction of which Zeta-Omicron is proud. Tau Kappa Epsilon has been represented in many activities on campus, and has won various awards including the Greek Sportsmanship Award, 1965-66; Most Outstanding Greek Organization, 1965-66, and the Best Fraternity Homecoming Display for the past two years. The brothers of the Zeta- Omicron chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon are proud of their growth and accomplishments on the campus of Western Carolina, and are looking toward the future for greater and more important accomplishments. While serving in this capacity in 1961 lie led a group of select students from across the nation on a trip to Greece. Duringtheir trip called, *In the Steps of < St, Paul," these ten students and Mr, Weekly retraced the missionary journeys of St. Paul, Tiny also did actual mission work in the small ('re^k village ol AlcxandroupoHs, Kev. Weekly is married to the former Ellen Harris, They have three children: George, and Donna, age 1. Rev. Weekly thinks very highly of W.C.C. as a coll: ge. He is extremely impressed by our student body, and our student- administration relationship. After visiting many campuses across the nation, Mr. Weekly says ours is rcs|x)nsible and aware of tie local, national, and international situations. He said, "I am glad not to sec as many i^intless demonstrations on tee cam; us of W.C.C. , , ." as he has witnessed in recent years. He said we have an awareness to the situation but a different reaction from that of tee demonstrators. On soire campuses, organizations work only for their benefit; hero most organizations seem to work for flic benefit of the student '.?ody as a whole. He is very impressed with tec growth of tiie school and said W.C.C. is at a unique point in its growth. It is fast changing frorr a small primarily teacher training college to one which will offer a wide* range of degrees. The college should look to tec future and offer a well rounded education for Western North Carolina. This region needs a good general education college. But with its growth, organizations and administration are faced with the problem of a gau of impersonal relation with the student body. Organizations are challenged to bridge the gaps of these impersonal relations; they must provide a warm, friendly atmosphere for the students, he stated. As Director of the Wesley Foundation he said, "... we must grow to reach andprovide activities for students . , . and we must expand our facilities and equipment to meet the needs of an increasing number of students." Concerning fraternities and sororities Mr, Weekly commented that they both can play an Important part in college life; especially here at W.C.C. where students are limited in the availability of outside activities. As our campus grows, so do our Greek organizations thus increasing the call and need for separate fraternity and sorority housing. Peace Corps Continued from page 10 provides a natural attraction for the committed youth," But how many "committed youth" are there? Most seniors the survey pointed out, are career-oriented, "It is clear," the report says, "that if the Peace Corps is to widen and intensify its appeal it must convince many seniors that two years in the Peace Corps is relevant to their future career." What these students want, the Harris survey concludes, is "to be convinced that they would be sought after when they returned, that they would not lose seniority in our highly competitive society as the result of an idealistic hiatus, however personally rewarding," The Brothers Of Delta Sigma Phi Wish You A Merry Christmas The Brothers Of Theta Xi Wish You A Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year
