  • Friday, May 6, 1966 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE 7 Alpha Phi Omega's WCC Olympics Promise Excitement, Competition, Fun By Steven Long On Saturday, May 14, beginning at 9, an unprecedented event will take place behind Reid Gymnasium. The Cullowhee O- lympics, a new addition to Spring Festival, will provide a- musement and competition for the WCC campus. The creation and execution of this event is attributed to Alpha Phi Omega, National Service Fraternity. Much work and preparation has gone into making the Cullowhee APO's " greased pig" which should offer plenty of resistance to any would-be catchers. Olympics worthy of student participation. As evidenced from the response at this time, the competition and interest should prove exciting and spirited. Any organization or group with 16 members is eligible to enter. This may be a fraternity, sorority, intramural team, campus club, or dormitory group. Participants will be vying for a beautiful 25" trophy which will be presented to the victorious team captain at the Spring Festival Dance Saturday, May 14. There will be equal opportunity for the girls' teams to win as for the boys. Scoring will be divided into the boys and girls divisions, each consisting of five events. First place in each event will be awarded 30 points, second place 20, and third place 10 points. Boys groups will be competing against boys groups and girls against girls, with the total points from each group being compared to determine the winner. Included in the boy's competition is a tricycle derby, a tug-o- war, Volkswagen tote, Roman chariot race, and greased pig chase. The complete details of these events have been sent to the various campus organizations and further copies are a- valiable in the cafeteria and a- round campus. All team captains have been asked to attend a very important meeting in McKee 108, at 7 o'clock on May 12. This will be to complete final plans concerning the events and to submit the $2.50 entrance fee which is being requested of each participating group. An additional 10 points will be given for each group represented at this vital meeting. The strains of "The Star Spangled Banner" will set in motion this unique event which will hopefully be a memorable contribution to the Spring Festival. Appropriate musical background will range from the "William Tell Overture" for the tricycle derby to "Old MacDon- ald Had a Farm" for the greased pig chase. A colorful and gala affair is in the makings and the participation and attendance by the student body will render it a success. Alpha Phi Omega has been responsible for many activities during the past year which have contributed both to our campus and our community. They have conducted several clean-up campaigns here on campus as well as on the main highway between Cullowhee and Sylva. They have aided the Red Cross by helping when the bloodmobile was on campus, and have offered a trophy for the organization contributing the most pints. They are currently sponsoring a Korean orphan. "Drag out your chariot, Caesar, for a ride around the parking lot." APO lists among the events scheduled for the Cullowhee Olympics a chariot race, Volks tote, Greased pig chase, tricycle race and a tug-o-war. This trophy will be given to the organization which compiles the most points in the various events.
