Friday, October 16, 1964 The Western Carolinian Page 15 Non- Conference Weekend Slated Only one league game is on tomorrow's schedule in the Carolinas Conference as the other six teams flex their muscles against outside opponents. The Catawba Indians travel to Boone to meet the Appalachian Mountaineers in the only family contest. The outlook: Carson-Newman at Elon Elon, after a shaky victory over Camp Lejeune last week, should be good enough tomorrow to easily defeat the Eagles. Carson-Newman is 2-0 against Carolinas Conference teams this year, but the Tennessee team should bite the dust against the league leaders. Elon 21, Carson- Newman 7. Bridgewater at Guilford After a week's layoff, the Quakers should be prepared to go full steam tomorrow; and with Jimmy Williams at quarterback, they could have an easy time of it against a small Bridgewater team. Guilford should continue its upward climb with its second straight win, say 18-10. Wofford at Newberry Winless Newberry again faces a rough road as the Indians entertain a strong Wofford eleven tomorrow. This game should go according to form, with Wofford on top by at least 30-6. Presbyterian at Furman Presbyterian meets another Southern Conference team this week, having defeated the Davidson Wildcats 13-0 last Saturday; and although the Blue Hose have a balanced team with good scoring punch, the nod must go to Furman, by 14- 7. East Carolina at Lenoir Rhyne Lenoir Rhyne has won its last two games to even its season record at 2-2 and tie Elon for the league lead with a 2-0 record. Coach Hanley Painter meets his old mentor tomorrow as Clarence Stasavich brings his East Carolina team to Hickory for a head-on clash of the single wings. The Pirates, new members of the Southern Conference, appear to have the edge on the Bears in overall strength, and should emerge victorious tomorrow. East Carolina by 18: 28-10. Mars Hill at Western Carolina Western Carolina, fresh from its upset win over Catawba last week, should be ready to put on a show for the Homecoming fans. Although the Cats have a 1-3 record compared to the 3-1 mark of Mars Hill, the two teams have played one common opponent — Catawba; Western won 7-0, Mars Hill lost 42-12. This first meeting between the two schools on the gridiron should be a thrilling spectacle, and Homecoming fans should be well pleased with a Catamount victory, say 24-12. Catawba at Appalachian Both teams will be trying to bounce back from last week's defeats, with the result one of the best games of the season. Catawba cannot be counted out of the title picture yet, as the Indians meet Elon next week. Therefore, a victory over Appalachian is a must. This is the last conference game for the Mountaineers this year and will mean the difference between a winning and losing conference season, as their record now stands a 2-2. The pick is the Apps in a close one, 19-14. Last week's results: 2 right, 3 wrong Season's totals: 13 right, 8 wrong Tag Football Slate Opens With 4 Games Fall Intramurals for men opened on Monday, October 12. In the opening day's events, four teams engaged in tag football games. The games were played at 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p. m. In the first contest two freshmen teams got their first taste of tag football as it is played Western Carolina style. The engaging teams were 3rd Buchanan and 1st and 2nd Robertson. The Robertson team scored the first touchdown of the intramural season on an intercepted pass in the first half. While holding the Buchanan team scoreless, Robertson proceeded to score two more touchdowns in the second half and emerged an 18-0 victor. In the second game, the Day Students and 3rd Reynolds fought a scoreless first half. It was not until late in that second half that Johnson hit Emerson with a 30-yard pass for the only score of the game, giving the Day Students a 6-0 win. Cats To Face MHC Lions On Saturday It's Homecoming Weekend and the Catamounts of Western Carolina College take on the Mars Hill Lions. The Cats are especially eager for a victory In this Homecoming Classic. In the words of Coach Robinson, "The team is anxious to show the fans that they can really play ball. The are most em- harassed by their past performances and are anxious to redeem themselves. In last week's game with Catawba they proved they can win." Since Robinson has been coaching the Cats they have won 6 games and lost two In Homecoming Contest. Not only are the Catamounts enthused, but also the Mars Hill Lions. Mars Hill is a newly established Senior College and is out to make its mark in the field of athletics. Mars Hill vs Western Carolina should prove to be an exciting contest. What more natural rivalry than two mountain teams representing their schools in an athletic contest? Mars Hill has a 3-1 record; they have beaten Newport News Apprentice, Marion, Alabama, and Gordon Military. Western Carolina has a 1 -3 record. Our only win was over Catawba last week. But the Ironical situation Is that Mars Hill's only loss was Western Carolina's only win, that being Catawba. The Lions are the largest team physically that the Cats will play. They have fourteen returning lettermen. The forward wall has an average of 216 pounds. The line consists of such players as Kees Aver (6'4", 260 pounds), who has been scouted by the American Football League; Jimmy Epps and Bob Benfield (240 pounds'); and J. C. Moss and Gerald Langford (220 pounds). On offense Mars Hill will be using variations of the "T". The Lions have a well balanced attack. The team usually uses a running attack but they will throw the ball. If they use a passing attack, the combination Roberts to Stevens should be very effective. Football Scoreboard Mars Hill ..( ) W.
