  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Friday, December 4, 1959 Library... Dangers Of Communist Youth Movement Jump' Club Goes To The Air Free fall, rigger and jump master might be words you aren't quite familiar with. Chances are you will be though, and all because of an exclusive club. Chances are that you might call the members nuts if you knew their intentions. "Jump" club as it is tagged, is the name of the m.ist exclusive of clubs at Western Carolina College. Requirements for membership are not the same for everyone but the basis of the requirements is plain, pure, unadulterated "GUTS." Here's a hypothetical situation. See if you could meet the requirements for membership in the "Jump" Club. You are in an airplane traveling at a rate of speed comparable to that of a torpedo. The altitude is over 2,500 feet. Your only mission is to step out of the airplane, count to five, pull a cord and maneuver yourself in the air until you land. Do you think you coud pass the "first step?" That's what we mean by intentions. Three of our fellow students actually plan to do this very thing, soon! It isn't the first time they have gone through this experience, not for Ed Weist, Pickens Connor or Bill Wilson. Bill alone has 49 jumps behind him. Ed Weist has 16 jumps in his history and Pic has 19 jumps to his record. How did these fellows first meet. Conner and Wilson went thru Jump School together at Fort Bragg before Conner was transferred to Fort Campbell. When they made their first jump at Fort Bragg one man was killed. Weist and Wilson once jumped from the same plane while they were with the football team at Fort Bragg. Weist was playing" halfback and Wilson was the manager. - The actual intentions of these three are to take their parachutes to any of the surrounding airports, probably Franklin, and get a pilot to take them up to approximately 2,500 feet where they will jump for the first time in free fall. They will use the five second delay and will fall about 100 feet per second. Later they plan to increase the altitude of the jumps and eventually they will leigthen the time of delay before opening the chute. Among the physical forces they need in correct order are the weather, the time and especially little or no wind on the ground or in the air. They must, of course, sign a relaease for the pilot, certifying that he is released from all responsibility. Eventually these fellows hope to be able to take in new members who have had no experience in jumping. Wilson is a qualified jumpmaster and Conner is a qualified rigger. Part of their standard equipment is a football helmet, jump boots and other gear, including the parachute, which weigh a total of approximately 40 pounds. Good luck to the 'Jump" Clubu of WCC. Would you still like to join? To an American, youth movements seem the essence of good training. Believing WCC students to be not fully aware of communist youth movements, and the danger they present through their use of indoctrination, the news staff of The Western Carolinian takes the liberty here of presenting excerpts from some of the world's major papers concerning the seventh Wold Youth Festival held this year in Vienna from July 26 to August 4. This festival was called The Vienna Youth Festival. "Hired propagandists of neo- fascist centers had been asserting that the Vienna stadium would be empty . . . the stadium . . . would not accommodate all those who wanted to attend ..." (5 August issue of the Soviet paper, Pravda.) "The Austrians completely boycotted the Festival . . ." (19 August issue of the Cairo weekly, Akher Saa.) "Their (the Festival organizer's) scandalous behavior started at the opening meeting in the Stadium . . ." (5 August editorial in the Vienna Socialist daily, Arbeiter-Zei- tung.) " 'Vienna greets the youth of the world,' the announcer kept screaming. 'The youth of the world hails Vienna!' " (27 July issue of the New York Times.) "Everywhere, Communist watchers, agitators and guards turned up in order to prevent free discussions and the distribution of non-Communist information . . ." (5 August, Arbeiter-Zeitung.) "Meetings, seminars and competitions contributed much to the success of the Festival." (World Youth, pages 1 and 17.) "It should be said that the US tourists . . . flooding Vienna and who can easily be identified as State Department agents . . ." (30 July, Pravda.) ". . . fascist-minded youngsters (have been) sent to Vienna en masse from West Germany and the United States ..." (3 August issue of Pravda.) "The Communist organizers of the World Youth Festival in Vienna .. . were disappointed . . ." (26 October, New York Times.) Information concerning The Vienna Youth Festival may be obtained by writing to College House Offices, 1430 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, Mass. (Continued from page 3) Golden.
