  • SEPTEMBER 8, 1947 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE THREE Popular Trends By LOEE ALLEY I'll be right back for another dip, but time out from swimming; I'm going shopping. Want to come along? Yes, I know that some of the more sophisticated magazines are advocating a big change in campus glamour, but knowing gals from Cully, I doubt if we wear long dresses, formals abovve our ankles, and those shiny satin frocks. New chances are here for the feet. The new slant in oxfords is away from loafers and return to saddles, and please take note of the new color combinations and lush white soles. Those red loafers with the strap too . . . nice if they are kept clean. As for ye dear old moccasins* how about those green moccasin.effect shoes you've seen in Seventeen? All the stores have them now too. As for dress wear, lizzard has hit an all time high—for the Iuckies who can afford lizard. If you can't, suede is still there, but hard to find without platform soles. That's tough on you tall gals, just call me shorty. Our recent favorite "The Belt" is still being worn, but the widths are now different. Wear them either extremely narrow or extremely wide. Also let's get a couple of those with the extra gadgets on them. Many of the new belts have chains on them. Something else we have noticed that's new is mono- grammed belts. I hope none of my gang get those, for I sure do like to borrow belts. And corduroy. It's here again and original too. Corduroy slacks and hooded sport jackets are all the go on larger campuses. Also suits, dresses, and top coats. It's not just a myth that evening dresses and evening wraps are being made from that heavy material, for they are on the market. They don't look too bad, but I still think net and taffeta are much more appropriate for a dance than plaid corduroy. Dresses do have a new length but here's hoping that no one turns up at WeeCeeTeeCee with their dresses eight inches below their knee. Most of us still can't afford a new wardrobe just because all the designers are on a rampage trying to outdo one another. The skirt length isn't all. Sleeves are at a new height called bracelet length. I found out by being dumb in a dress shop. The saleslady explained to me that the long sleeves weren't too short, and by looking around, I found out she was right all the way. I have already mentioned the new length in formal wear, and perhaps it's because I haven't gotten used to it, but it looks all wrong. What do you think? While I was shopping for anklets, I got some new ideas too. Next to the angora counter were dazzling anklets in nylon. They are made to look like angora with a long fluffy finish and just as soon as I get $1.40 I am going to have a pair of them. They come in all pastel colors. Perhaps your favorite dress shop is pulling the same trick that all the stores in our fair city have Touch Football First Sport In Men's Intramurals Touch football was recently announced as the first sport in the men's intramural program this fall. In a recent statement, Marion McDonald, director of intramurals, said that the appointments for the intramural council will be forthcoming shortly. It is suggested that men interested in participating in intramural football watch the bulletin boards and contact their council- men in order to organize teams as soon as possible. Councilmen will be appointed for the various floors and will constitute the administrative body in cases involving protests, policies, and questions of eligibility. The aim of intramurals as stated in the 1947 Handbook is "to afford an opportunity for every student in the college to build up a repertoire of wholesome recreational habits through athletic competitions." Miss Helen Hartshorn, physical education instructor, suggests the goal of the girls' program with the pharse, "A sport for every girl and a girl for every sport." McDonald has announced the following figures for last year's men's program: grand total of participants, 638; total spectators for fbur major sports, 4,945; participants in the four major sports, 329. Softball had the most participants with 117 men playing. The intramural program is based on a point system in which individuals obtain points simply for participating with additional points begin given for winning. Charles Harris from Valdese, N. C.<- won the individual award last year and Fourth Floor Madison won the team trophy. It is suggested by the Intramural Department that both new and old students make it a point to read the Intramural Constitution and familiarize themselves with the rules. These rules may be found in the 194647 Handbook on Intramurals or may be obtained at the Physical Education office. Information, Please! Millers Announce The Birth Of Son Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Miller, Boo dleville, have announced the birth of a 7 pound son, Frederick Andrew, August 31 at 9 a. m. in the C. J. Harris hospital, Sylva. Miller is a graduate of W. C. T. C. and left Sept. 1, to become assistant coach at Needham-Brough- ton high school, Raleigh. Mrs. Miller was a student at Cullowhee majoring in English. Never before have freshmen been so lucky. Due to a brilliant idea of the "good ole Editor" you're gonna get the inside dope on this institution. (First, I'd better tell you this information isn't free but we'll settle that later—in the Soda Shop, maybe?) As Tom Parker would say, "You haven't lived until you've adequately sampled Mr. Dodson's scientific vocabulary. Just as a reminder, tho, a dictionary might come in handy. It's advisable, so the upper classmen say, to have a full secretarial course, with emphasis on shorthand, before entering Miss Mabel Irene Tyree's classes—that is, if you expect to have intelligent notes afterward. While we're on the subject, all you future John Barrymore's or just plain "lambs for the slaughter" should sign up for the Mighty Western Carolina Players. It's the life!! Ask Bob Pitillo. There's no need in our mentioning Joe Wallinstein because he'll meet you at the door with outstretched hands. Mrs. Hinds puts absolutely no restriction on the Student Union except: you can't date during the week, leave dirty dishes in the kitchen, or in anyway make your presence known. So Watch Your Step! And O-O-O-O-O-O Who is this? Why, Miss Albright, of course. A busy person indeed what with the girls' reputations to attend to, pansies to grow, and history to teach—or make. No one has decided which. That smiling, friendly face you meet every day on the campus is none other than Enstein Hinds, the math professor. Enough said, but don't say we didn't warn you. Another warning: Don't forget to carry your pillows to chapel because the seats get a little hard for sleeping—unless, of course, the program consists of Hooper, Carringer, Lindsey, or the Faculty quartet. Never think that the campus is deserted after 10:30. You'd be sadly mistaken. We've been told by reliable sources (a few nightowls, to be exact) that one Kenneth Brown, commonly knpwn as "the Coach Young Opened Football Drill On Sept. 1 Coach Tom Young opened drills on Monday, September 1, for the 1947 season, with some 85 men on hand. Twenty-five lettermen were among those returning. They were Gene Grogan, all conference end; Dan Robinson, tackle; Clark Pennell, guard; Hugh Constance, center; Vaughn Lemmond, center; Arthur Byrd, guard; Bill Powell, guard; Ralph Humphries, tackle; Harry Jaynes, tackle; Howard Barnwell, end; Jack Allison, end; Bill Estes, end; Bob Tate, end; Clayton Everhart, tackle; Jim Bryson, back; Von Ray Harris, back; Paul Monroe, back; Ovie Heavner, back; Stanley Henry, back; Jim English, back; Harry Duke, back; Ralph Clark, center; McKinley Hensley.back, and Joe Hunt, back. Jack Arrington, 220 pound guard, who was on the injured list last fall, will strengthen the forward wall. Warren Wylie, elusive half back, who hails from Andover, Mass., is an up and coming star. Max Beam, 210 pound tackle on reserves will be working hard for a starting berth this year, and Jim Banks, 190 pound end. The first few days of practice were spent on conditioning with heavy gear slated for later in the week. The linemen at Western Carolina during the drills will be spending quite some time on the new blocking machine Coach Young acquired this summer. The new dressing rooms underneath the auditorium have been completed, and painted. The Cats this year will be attired in some new swank game uniforms. The pants will be silver, nylon double stretch; jerseys gold and purple and gold. Everything points to a great year at Western Carolina in football. They will be out to win the North State Conference championship. been up to this summer. Have you found their most expensive looking slips reduced to incredible prices? That my dears is because of the length. If dresses are to be longer, then so must the under garment. If you want them, there have really been some bargains. Here's hoping that the freshmen girls all wear new and attractive clothes, for it's so dull writing about clothes people have worn for the last three or four years, Eagle-Eye Knight Watchman," is omnipresent. Are you eager for excitement? Hungry for adventure? Starved for pleasure? Sign up for the journalism course. It's the easiest, most enjoyable class on the hill. (And there's no catch, honestly).)
