ECKENROD'S STUDIO Sylva PLAY DAY TO BE HELD MAY 8TH ( By Grayson Cope) Western Carolina will have a field day here May 8 for all college students, High school, and Elementary school students, Coach Poindexter announced today. The event will start at 2 o'clock Monday, May 8. Chapel and classes will be turned over bo the program. Coach Poindexter said that he wanted all College students, High school an<l Elementary students to take pan in the coming event. This program will be held for both boys and girls. Coach Poindexter has been planning and Working hard this year trying to have sport! that all students will have a chance to enter in. It seems that he is making great headway toward his goal as there are not very many boys on the campus that have not or are not taking part in some kind of sports. He says that before the quarter ends that he wants every man and girl to have participated in some kind of athletics during the school Much interest throughout the student body of the college and high school will be expected as it will be the first field day ever held on the college campus. The college boys and girls will have many different events to enter. The program will be divided by classes. Ea.-h class will participate among its self, until they have selected thiee of its best to meet in the main event in the field day contest, then three from each class may enter. Each person will be limited to three events besides the relay. This will keep one person if theie may be one, from winning too many events for his or her class. The Graded school boys and girls will have another field day here May l'.tth. Some of the events for the college boys will be : 30 yd. dash; 50 yd. dash; 75 yd. dash; 100 yd. dash; 220 yd. dash; high jump; broad jump; shot- put; 50 yd. hop; throwing of baseball; throwing of football; throwing of basket ball; punting football; hoise shoe pitching, and relays. Some of the events for the girls will be: 30 yd. dash; 50 yd. dash; 75 yd. dash; high jump; standing- broad jump; 30 yd. hop; throwing of baseball; throwing of basketball; hor.-e shoe pitching; and relays. The high school events for boys and girls will be ahout similar to that of the college. The graded school boys and girls program will be much lighter than that of the high school. About eight or ten different events will be going on at the same time during the afternoon. This will give time for many different events throughout the program. Special events will be arranged fo. the faculty members. Coach Poindexter did not say as to what they will be. Come on students and faculty members and lets help Coach Poindexter put his Field Day over in a big way. If we will.ill work together we will TENNIS TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD AT EARLY DATE FOUR COURTS ARE IN FINE CONDITION (By Grayson Cope) Western Carolina net-men organized a tennis club last week. Paul Lyday was elected president of the club; Allie Little, vice president; and Earl Pryor, secretary and treasurer. Much interest is being shown throughout the student body of the college for tennis. There is plenty of material for a good tennis team here this spring. Paul Buchanan, champion of the boys inter-mural here last spring, is back along with Allie Little, champion of the girls last year. Others who played outstanding tennis here last spring are: Walter Thomas, who was defeated in the finals by Buchanan. Guy Sutton, who was defeated in the semi-finals by Thomas and Emma Thompson who was defeated in the girls finals. With this material and what new candidates that have come to the college this spring Western Carolina should be able to put forth a winning tennis team. The elimination tournament will be played by classes. Each class will play until they pick their winner then the winners of the Seniors, Juniors, Sophmores and Freshmen will draw and play for the championship. The boys and girls will both participate in the tourney. After the tournament a selected team of boys will probably go to Salisbury to play in the North State Athletic Association Tournament. The North State Conference Tournament will be held May 5th and 6th. This will be the first time for Western Carolina to participate in inter-collegiate tennis. Coach Poindexter hopes that by next year he will be able to put out a real tennis team and meet other colleges in contests. (By Grayson Cope) Barn-yard golf has become a sport at Western Carolina that most all the students take part in. You very seldom pass by the Madison building unless some one is pitching horse shoe. Bernita Sutton and Lena Allison should give plenty of competition to any two. Another great game that much interest seems to be attached to is that of Croquet. The Croquet sets are in use most of the time. Some of the star players are Chas. "Flat Creek" Almand and John Keever. Coach Poindexter has done much to arouse the interest of intermurals of different sports on the college campus since his arrival here. The basketball inter-mural turned out to b success. By having inter-mural it gives every student, boy or girl, a chance to take part in the event that is going on. Boxing and wrestling has become a popular event this season. Although the mat-men lost their first meet they made a great showing and by next season Western Carolina is expected to have several meets with different W.C.T.C. To Offer Scholarship Award (By Grayson Cope) Coach Poindexter will give an award to the boy and girl who makes a let- to- in some sport and also makes highest average in his or her school work duiing the three quarters of school.
