Collegiate Digest Photo by Rennie Testing New Scientific "Monster" — Students of Northwestern University look on while a concrete column is prepared for testing in the new two-and-a-half story transverse universal testing machine which has a capacity of 1,000,000 pounds of pressure. Despite its great strength, this machine tests loads to an accuracy of one-tenth of one per cent. This concrete column withstood a pressure of 505,000 pounds before it disintegrated. The machine, built especially for Northwestern, cost $90,000, and has the greatest transverse capacity in the world. Madison College Does Its Bit — Virginia Agnor and Marjorie Fitz- patrick add donations to the pile of books being collected for soldiers, sailors and marines in the lobby of Madison Memorial Library. The drive is being sponsored on campus by Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority of Madison College in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
