  • This anonymous letter to the editor in the November 20, 1986 issue of the Western Carolinian is in response to Mike Clark's letter to the editor on October 2. Clark, operator of the Cullowhee Quik-Stop, had complained about the Western Carolinian advertising Lavender Bridges. Lavender Bridges, an anonymously founded student organization open to all individuals, aimed to promote awareness of lesbian and gay lifestyle, provide lesbian and gay resources, and increase communication with all students and community members. The first organizational meeting took place October 10, 1985 and was officially recognized by the office of Student Development on December 13, 1985. The last mention of the group appeared in the October 10, 1991 issue of the Western Carolinian.
  • Editor Just "normal // Dear Sir, This is in response to Mike Clark's letter concerning the Lavender Bridges (Oct. 2 '86). Gay men and women are NOT immoral or sick. We are just as "normal" (whatever that means!) as heterosexuals I can't believe that some people are as closed minded as they are. Today's world is changing Mr. Clark - OPEN YOUR EYES! Maybe if you did, you'd learn something - namely that gay people are just as "normal" (there's that word* again!) as straight people. We have ideas, goals, dreams - everything we need to get us through a society that halfway supports/halfway condemns gay people. Like it or not, gay people ARE NOT going to go away and we ARE NOT going to go back in the closet. Gay people will survive. I would like to commend the Western Carolina for doing gay students and adults of the community a great service by printing the scheduled meetings of Lavender Bridges. No one is telling anyone to attend or even take a small part in these meetings - they are for Gay men only - as the advertisement plainly states. Homosexual members are growing Mr. Clark-you nor anyone else can change that. The Student Emergency Care Team is the campus organization dedicated to providing quality patient care in an emergency situation. Our members are full- time students, and are state certified to provide treatment, rescue, and transportation of the critically sick or injured.
