  • western ■• • arolinian Clemson's Top Receiver Becomes Newest Catamount by Donald Costello Western Carolina's football team was pleased to learn that Clemson University's leading receiver had enrolled at WCU. Kenya Crooks, 6-3, 210 pounds, wanted to be more involved in the pass-oriented offense of Western Carolina instead of the running dominated program at Clemson. Crooks started 11 games as wide receiver for the Clemson Tigers last season en route to becoming the team's leading receiver. Crooks had at least one reception in each game and caught 30 passes for 444 yards. Nine of those receptions were for more than 20 yards and two of those were touchdowns. In three seasons with the Tigers, Crooks had 61 receptions for 751 yards and four touchdowns. He was a first team All-South selection for Seneca (S.C.) High and played in the Shrine Bowl. Crooks was rated as the eighth best receiver in the nation by one recruiting source. Head Coach Bill Bleil says that Crooks will "add another dimension to our offense, as he is a prominent passing target who has proven he can catch the ball in a crowd and run with it." Crooks began practicing with the team on Sunday following his physical and program orientation. Crooks will be eligible to play in the first game of the season against Liberty on September 13. NCAA rules state that a player can transfer from a Division I-A program to a Division I-AA program without losing a year of eligibility. The rules also state that the player must receive a release from the Division I-A school, be eligible at that school and transfer the necessary credits to the Division I-AA school. "I'm not sure that Western Carolina has ever had two six-foot-three receivers on the field at the same time," stated Bleil. Aside from Crooks, Mike Sellers, 6-3, transferred from East Carolina is expected to be the number one flanker on the Catamount squad. Intramurals Update 1.
