  • Western Carolinian August 25,1994 •It Golf Season Tees Off with High Expectations Derek Smolik Assistant Sports Editor After six years in the lower echelon of the Southern Conference standings, WCU's golf team appears ready to make a serious challenge for the championship this year. Four of last years top five golfers return and two promising newcomers add depth to the squad that finished sixth in last years SC Championship. Sophomore's Jamie Eckard and Jamie Whitley each had outstanding rookie seasons and return to lead the team this year. Whitley had the best single-season stroke average for a freshman in WCU history as he averaged 76.26 per round. Eckard had the 12th best average in WCU history with a 77.61. Mike Sutton, a junior from Niagara 'alls, Ontario, is one of two Catamount "Pperclassmen returning this season. utton, who has a career stroke average of 80.12, has been a consistently solid player for Coach Johnny Wike's squad. His credits at WCU include a low round of 71 and the 14th lowest career stroke average. Drew Lindsey is the lone senior on this year's team and has been the model of consistency in his three years at WCU. Lindsey has dropped nearly a stroke per year off his average. His 78.10 last year ranks as the 16th best in school history. He is ranked eighth on WCU all-time list with 79.19 average. Justin Ashe, a sophomore from Hayesville, NC, had an 87.5 stroke average, with a low round of 82. He will probably see more playing time this year after playing in just four rounds as a freshman. Tim Anders, a Smoky Mountain High grad, enters his second year at WCU after averaging 85.5 per round last year. Derrick Caudill, a sophomore from Asheboro, NC enters his first year at WCU after earning state runner-up honors in 1992-93 at Southwest Randolph High School. Scott Harrison, a freshman from Gastonia, NC, comes to Western after a very succesful high school career at Ashbrook High. Harrison had a 73.5 stroke average at Ashbrook and placed fifth in the 1993-94 state 4-A Tourna- CONTINUED FROM PflEE 21 "Kristin is the quarterback of the team," Martin said. "She is a skilled setter, and will be asked to learn a lot about the 'hidden secrets' of the game." Being asked to fill the shoes for Ross is Sawyers, a junior outside hitter from Mount Airy. Sawyers teamed with Ross last year, averaging 3.19 kills per game, good for eighth in the conference and was in double figures in kills in 20 matches. Goebel is coming off a solid rookie season in which she became a regular starter early on and averaged 1.14 kills and 1.64 digs a game. The key to the season for this year's team should be how well they adapt to the loss of Ross and how soon they adjust to the new style of coach- ment. WCU has never won the Southern Conference Golf title, but with four golfers returning off last years sixth place squad, the Cats have their best chance to place in years. ing that Martin plans to bring to the team. The Lady Cats will be tested early with four early-season tournaments, including two in Cullowhee. WCU opens up their season with a Sept. 2 match against the Campbell Camels in the North Carolina A&T Tournament. Martin said she hoped more students would come out to support the team with its new and more aggressive style of volleyball. "I bring a different philosophy to the game," Martin said. "It is my hope that the Cats will start fast, gain momentum and develop a belief in themselves that they have the talent and ability to compete with any team in the region." i|SERVI OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS MY DEGREE GOT ME THE INTERVIEW.
