  • Gg o) SWivenss- eos WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY CULLOWHEE, NORTH CAROLINA 28723 OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR May 13, 1984 Dear Graduates: These Commencement Exercises in which you are involved are very special to you, and they certainly are to me. It was ten years ago, in June of 1974, that I came to Western Carolina University to be your Chan- cellor. These have been some of the best of the 40 years that I have spent in higher education. We have had a part in building an outstanding University and telling the world about these activities and the changes which have taken place at WCU. We have had wonderful support from the Legislators, the people through- out the region, and beyond in obtaining the financial resources that have made all of these developments possible. A wide range of academic programs has been added, all of which have been needed and sought by the students. The campus has grown in beauty and developed into an environment that is unique among colleges and universities across this nation. For all of these developments to have occurred during the decade which I have been with you gives me a deep sense of satisfaction in serving an institution, faculty, staff, and especially a student body who care. You have given to us the opportunity to teach you and to increase our enroll- ment as we have expanded our educational programs. You have aspired to greater achievements in your academic performance, and we know that this dedication will pay handsome dividends in the years ahead. We are in- creasingly proud of the record being achieved by our students and the outstanding accomplishments of our alumni. During the years ahead you will have the opportunity of making major contributions to mankind. We firmly believe that the preparation which you obtained here will adequately fit you for the complexities of the life you will be facing. We wish for you and for yours the very best, and we encourage you to keep close touch with your university and be active in its alumni affairs. Good luck and Godspeed to each of you. Sincerely, H. F.
