Hunt, Jr., a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, attended public schools in Wilson County. He was awarded the bachelors degree in agricultural education and master of science degree in agricultural economics from North Carolina State University, where he served two terms as president of student government. The Governor receiv- ed the juris doctor degree from the University of North Carolina. Governor Hunt served as assistant state Democratic Party chairman and was a delegate to the 1968 Democratic National Convention. From 1973 until 1977, he served as Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina and was elected Governor of the state on November 2, 1976. The chairman of the Education Commission of the United States, Governor Hunt has establish- ed innovative reading and testing programs in public schools and a residential high school for Students gifted in mathematics and science. For many years, he has been concerned with im- Proving the quality of public school instruction in North Carolina and currently has plans for a recognition program of Schools of Excellence in the state. Governor Hunt serves as chairman of the Task Force on Technological Innovation and the Subcommittee on Education of the National Governors Association. He also has served as chairman of the Appalachian Regional Commission and of the National Democratic Governors Conference. He recently completed a term as chairman of the National Democratic Partys Com- mission on Presidential Nomination. The Governor and his wife, the former Carolyn Leonard of Mingo, lowa, have four children.
