WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY CULLOWHEE, NORTH CAROLINA 28723 OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR May 15, 1983 Dear Graduates: You, the graduates of 1983, are needed in the society of which you will become a part, and your education and talents can be extremely important as you seek solutions to some of the problems with which we are confronted. You leave us with an excellent education, and we believe that you are prepared for the life you will be living. You graduate at a time when it may seem to you that there are more problems than opportunities, but we do not want you to enter into this important time of your life with undue concern. We had anticipated some of the difficulties for the decade of the 80's, but other problems were unexpected. As you leave the university, you will be moving into a world where financial stress and economic difficulties appear to be the norm. While we believe and hope that we are near the end of the recession being experienced in this country, the ideal employment opportunities may not be readily available. We ask that you not be discouraged but be persistent in seeking the position which will best utilize your talents and enable you to become a productive member of society. Many of the troubles on the international scene seem so unnecessary and avoidable. We pray that these conflicts between nations are settled soon and that they not lead to further involvement of this and other nations. The conflict and strife among various peoples in other parts of the world should not be taken as deterrents but rather as opportunities for you to live your life in such a way that the world becomes a better place for all who are to follow. We wish for you the very best, and we encourage you to keep in touch with Western Carolina University and those who have had the opportunity to work with you during this brief time in your life. Good luck and Godspeed to each of you. Sincerely, . F. Robinson Chancellor WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY IS A CONSTITUENT INSTITUTION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AND AN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION/EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.
