  • \Gain Fifth Place Catamounts Beat Appalachian, 89-87 CULLOWHEE, Feb. 15—Western Carolina's Catamounts nailed down fifth place in the North State Conference standings here tonight by stopping the Appalachian \loun- R. was the eighth conference victory for Coach Jim Gudger's Cata- 1 mounts, who wound up both their conference season and their home slate tonight. They have lost cicht loop games. Appalachian's league record now standts at 6-9 with one more game to play. The Mountaineers, paced by Bill Campbell and Dave Aberna'hy (grabbed the lead in the first three minutes-of play and were in front 1 -*5-35, at halftime. Western Carolina began to narrow the gap as the second half started and, after eight minutes of play, surged in front on a pair of| free throws by forward Harris Pryor. 1^1^^^^ The catamounts were never behind after that point as the sit nSL0^"d Jimmy Matthews protected the lead. Matthews paced the Western Carolina scoring with 24 points Pryor and Tony Migaolo added 19 Ahl18't,reTct,ively- CamPbeH and Abernathy bucketed 25 and 24, respectively, for Appalachian. U—Western Carolina's Catamounts rolled upi am 11-point halftime advantage and then put down a Guilford rally in the second half to beat the Quakers, 79-72, here tonight '- ja North State Conference game. Both teams started slow with neither being able to score in th< first minute and a half. The Cata mounts then jumped to a 7-0 lead before Guilford broke the ice. The Catamounts went in front 21-15, at the end of the first 10 minutes and held a 45-36 command at halftime. Guilford then found the range to close the gap to two points. 52-50. with seven minutes gone in the second half. Set shots by Jimmy Matthews and Ronnie Swartzel and free throws by Harris Pryor pulled the Catamounts back out front for the Matthews led the attack with lfi points. Swartzel added 13 and Pryor and center Bill Bowen each connected for 12 points. Don Hendrick paced Guilford with 15 points. Oz Schmidt and Jim Burgess each hit for 14. In the preliminary, Brevard Col- ge dumped the Western Carolina Jayvees, 79-72. Western Carolina plays its final home game of the season Wednesday night against Appalachian.
