  • Catamounts Root Eagles Bv 81 To 67 Tough 10-Game Schedule WCC Slates Tampa Gridders This Fall CULLOWHEE, Feb. 14—Western Carolina College will launch athletic relations with the Uni- I Tampa next fall. Coach Tom Young made this announcement today when he listed a tough 10-game football schedule for his Catamounts. The Catamounts will open the season against Wofford, Sept. 10, in Spartanburg, S. C, and will complete their schedule in Tampa, Fla., Nov. 12. Voung said Western Carolina had signed a two-year contract , with Tampa. The Catamounts will travel to Tampa both years. Five North State Conference ^imos dot the shite. Loop foes j include Appalachian, Catawba. j East Carolina, Lenoir Rhyne and Five Home Games The home schedule includes five games. Four will be played in Cullowhee and one in Ashe- ville's Memorial Stadium. The Asheville game. Sept. 17, will pit Western Carolina against Carson-Newman. The homecoming game will be played against East Carolina, Oct. 15. Although there isn't a "breath- Western Carolina mentor who stands under an unruly shock of coal-black hair, apparently isn't dreading any of his opponents. For the first time in five years, Young will have a veteran squad returning next fall. Twenty-five letlermen and a host of experienced reserves are expected to be in camp when the Catamounts start spring drills March 16. Young will lose only three men from last year's team which finished one-half game out of third place. Guard Joe Hipps, halfback Jim Garrison, and end Bob Harvey will graduate this Servicemen Returning But three lettermen are slated to return from the anned services and should bolster the Catamounts' grid fortunes. They are guard Bob Setzer, tackle Frazier Long and halfback Nookie McCrary. He plans to shift Chuck Farmer, res quarterback last season, to left half. He added that Farmer w also see some action at quarterback. The Western Carolina coach said the Catamounts should be stronger defensively next sea son. They led the conference ii scoring last season with 217 points. This was 125 points rr than they scored the previous year. But, defensively, they couldn't show any gain. The opposition scored 162 points in 1953 and had exactly the same total last No Thanksgiving Game No Thanksgiving Day game if scheduled this fall. Western Carolina played its first holiday attraction in more than 10 years last season in WayneM-iHr Young said he would like to continue the series but could not land a college opponent.
