  • The Weeks Law and the Extension of the National Service The Weeks Law, signed by President Taft on March 1, 1911, laid the basis for the establishment by the United States government, with the cooperation of the several states, of national forests in the East. The Weeks Law was named for its author, John W. Weeks, a native of Lancaster, New Hampshire, Congressman and Senator from Massachusetts, and Secretary of War under President Taft. The enactment of the law was a milestone in the nation-wide conservation movement. The White Mountain National Forest, which extends into Maine, now covers an area of more than 1,000 square miles. In 1935 the Green Mountain National Forest was established in Vermont, embracing purchase units of 600,000 acres. RATES The Mount Washington Hotel makes a special rate of $6.00 per day.
