Trail near the Nolichucky River.8 The last flare of this frontier spirit was the curious and little known independent state of Franklin9, which, under Colonel John Seiver, maintained its sovereignty from 1784 to 1788, before yielding to the claims of North Carolina. Thus the Watauga settlements became a part of East Tennessee and the ranges were to hold no more the burnings, massacres and desperate hard- ships of the frontier settlements at their base. But the traveler along the crest, who looks east and west over the cultivated and fertile valleys, may vaguely understand and appreciate the desperate heroism and sacrifice, which wrested this region from the Indians and then held if for the American Colonies. The Unaka and Pisgah sections of the Appalachian Trail utilize, for the most part, Forest Service trails. This undated manuscript titled, “The Unaka and the Pisgah,” is by Myron Haliburton Avery (1899–1952), who was president of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and chairman of the board of the Appalachian Trail Conference. The paper discusses the Unaka Range and Pisgah Forest and the history of each region. The manuscript was collected by George Masa. Known for his photography, George Masa (1881-1933) was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
