  • The Unaka and Pisgah section comprise the central portion of the western rim for a distance of 225 miles. They embrace the Iron, Unaka and Bald Mountain segments; slightly east lie the Stone. The New and Big Pigeon Rivers break through these sections to form, respectively, their northern and southern boundaries. The Watauga and Nolichucky Rivers cross the range through canyons so sheer that no highway can find a place along their banks. The transverse ridges, dividing each river valley from its neighbor to the north and south, contain peaks - such as the Roan – which in many instances are loftier and more impressive than either the western or eastern rims. The Forest Service has issued an interesting descriptive folder of the Unaka National Forest. Otherwise, one searches in vain for the literature of this region.
