  • crossed Rich Mountain and Cade's Cove Mountain (the inhabitants of the Cove claim that there are two), stop again to gaze down upon Cade's Cove—13,000 acres of almost level farming land with limestone soil are surrounded by mountains of sandstone. You can see the state-line ridge extending from Gregory's and Parson's Balds on your right to beyond Thunderhead on your left. Meig's and smaller mountains can be seen beyond the upper end of the Cove. When you reach the church at the foot of the mountain, follow the right-hand road for about one mile to John Oliver's place. About two hundred feet in front of Oliver's Lodge is a point for another excellent view of the Cove and its surrounding mountains. Sunsets and sunrises in the Cove are never-to-be-forgotten experiences. Leave by the trail which passes back of the old cabin and through the gap to Abram's Creek. Cross Laurel Branch which enters Abram's Creek at this point, and follow the trail. Several low ridges will be crossed, each affording a view. The trail finally turns left and drops off sharply to the foot of the falls. Lunch at this point, and return by the same trail. An additional hike for a few ambitious hikers is planned for those who wish to explore farther along Abram's Creek..Make previous arrangements«to have your car taken by way of Maryville and out the road to Calderwood to the point where Abram's Creek is reached. There is little if any trail from the falls down Abram's Creek to the Calderwood road. The distance is at least seven miles, probably more. Leave Saunders System at 4:00 P. M. Take canteen and food for three meals, or make reservations at Oliver's. Round-trip to Abram's Falls, hiking distance 6 miles, by car 100 miles. Trail smooth and easy. Highest elevation is Cade's Cove Mountain, about 2600 feet. Leaders: J. P. PORTER (2-0463) and ROBERT McGinn '3-8295). November 8 COVE MOUNTAIN Those who made the trip to Cove Mountain 49
