The last flare of this frontier spirit was the curious and little known independent state of Franklin, which, under Colonel John Seiver, maintained its sovereignty from 1784 to 1788, before yielding to the claims of North Carolina. Thus the Watauga settlements became a part of East Tennessee and the ranges were to hold no more the burnings, massacres and desperate hardships of the frontier settlements at their base.
