  • Page 10 a trail-side shelter on Siler's Bald. There Is still good fishing in Hazel Creek and Eagle Creek, but the only way to get up to those streams is from Fontana Lake. Hazel Creek, Forneys Creek, and Eagle Creek all now flow into Fontana Lake. Jack's house on Hazel Creek has been torn down. However, there is a camp ground there now and a shelter. The Coburn house in Bryson was sold after Jack's death. There are now fine roads Into and across the Smokies and so many enjoy the beauties of that mountain range. That is as it should be. I sometimes wish that I could walk those lovely old trails once more and camp again on Deep Creek and at the Hall Cabin and Siler Meadows. There is nothing quite like it. The trails and the camp sites are still there, and I know there are many good hikers to enjoy them. It is indeed fine that the great beauties of the Smokies will always be preserved as Horace Kephart and Jack Coburn and many others hoped they would be. Well, I am about "writ out". I wish that I could more adequately picture my trips out in the Smokies. I would like to write about a trip that I made to another favorite moiintain-top of mine In the Smokies - Andrews Bald - but that Is another story. Incidentally, there is now a trail to Andrews Bald from the Forney Ridge Parking Area at Clingmans Dome. That trail is only a mile and a half in length and should be a fairly easy trail to walk. Andrews Bald is well worth seeing and a good place to camp out. There is - or was - a big spring close to the top. It is a sort of flat-top mountain, about half covered with Balsam-trees and the other half with meadow grass. There is an extensive and very beautiful view from that mountain. It is on the North Carolina side of the Smokies. A delightful trail to walk is the one leading from Clingman's Dome
