  • Pa«e 8 had tears in his eyes. That old gun had two or three notches on it. I believe Jack gave it to the Smoky Park Museum. There is one story I must tell about Jack Coburn. One Time while he was over in Asheville for a few days, he received a telegram reading as follows: "Jack, come back - I had to kill me a man". Jack came back, and the man was not convicted. He had killed a man in a fight. Jack kept that telegram a long time. I saw it. That story is typical of how the people in the Smokies and in Bryson felt about Jack Coburn. Mrs. Coburn used to tell me how anyone in trouble or needing help would come to Jack. I don't think he ever let anyone down. Well, to finish my story of our trip into the Smokies. After our walk up to Sugar Fork, we came back to Jack's place and spent that night there. The following morning we said good-by to Hazel Creek and Bone Valley, going down to Proctor and to the Murphy line. We had been on a trip to be remembered always. Mr. Kephart is buried in Jack Coburn's plot in the old graveyard high up on a hill at Bryson City. Mrs. Kephart is also buried there - and Jack Coburn and Mrs. Coburn. I made two sad trips out to Bryson in later years; one to Mr. Kephart's funeral in 1931 and the other to the funeral of Jack Coburn, Mrs. Coburn, and Miss Wiggins (Mrs. Coburn's sister) in 1934. Strange to say, Mr. Kephart was killed In an automobile accident between Whittier and Bryson; also a friend of his who was with him. Jack Coburn, Mrs. Coburn, and Miss Wiggins were all three killed in an automobile accident in the Nantahala Gorge. The Coburns and Miss WiggiHS were on the way to Andrews for the wedding of Mrs. Coburn's niece.
