  • January t wen try-ninth, 1901. Prof. J, A. Holmes, Chapel Hill, M. C. My dear Prof. Holmes: - Your favor of the 28th inst. just received. I have just heard this morning that Senator Pritchard has also made a statement to a news paper man that our bill could not possibly pass at this short session. Now regarding your letter, I do not understand the last two sentences at all, but first let me quote:"It will be best to be careful in the publication of news paper articles. Some of our Washington friends fear we may over-do in that direction.* I hardly know what you mean by these sentences. Have we been in-discreet in what we have published in the past9 Have we put more into the news papers than we should? If so, I would state that the only article which we have sent to the news papers since the fourth of last fuly is the President's message the Secretary* s letter and the hill now pending. This was sent out one week ago and was only sent because you, Mr, Richards, Senator Pritchard and Mr, Pearson urged me both h y letter and telegram to send the same as soon as possible. As before stated, this is the only article which we have addressed to the press in the time mentioned. Now some of our Washington friends fear that we may overdo in that direction. Kindly tell me what you mean9 We certainly do not
