Stories of mountain folk broadcast: 2012-05-19
-
To open the show, Amy shares memories of her mother, Cannie Owen Ammons, in her story "Cannie From Wolf Mountain,” accompanied by "O Perfect Love" from Jo Northup and Richard Birt of Asheville. On Creative Corner, Doreyl and her guest, Bryan "Barney" Cagle, from the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department, discuss the Cullowhee Recreation Center and the upcoming Patchwork Folk and Fabric Festival in Cullowhee; the song "Hog Chase" closes the segment. Amy’s guest, Marlene Walker Dillion—currently of Bryson City—describes her childhood in the coal camps of rural West Virginia, followed by the Cockman Family’s "Old Time Religion.” On Black Roots of Appalachia, Victoria’s guest, Ann Miller Woodford of Andrews, shares stories of her childhood and memories of attending a one-room schoolhouse; Hylo Brown’s "I am a Pilgrim" closes the interview. On Down Another Road, Judy talks with Tommy Case, a local potter and grandson of the founder of Arden’s Pisgah Forest Pottery, which opened in 1926; the song "Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies" from Sheila Kay Adams follows. The show closes with "Hard Times" from Dirk Powell.
