Stone Mountain, Georgia

  • wcu_picturing-137.jp2
  • Photographer George Masa (1881-1933) made a series of photographs of Stone Mountain, Georgia in the late teens or early 1920s. Work on the monument began in 1916 and was abandoned by the original sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who left in 1924 to pursue work on Mount Rushmore. In some of the photographs, the scaffolding for carving the monument is visible.
