Penstock at Rymers Ferry

  • wcu_great_smoky_mtns-6451.jpg
  • A penstock is an enclosed pipe that delivers water to hydro turbines. This 1927 photograph is of a penstock at Rymers Ferry, on the south side of Cheoah Lake in Graham County, North Carolina. At this point, the water flows from one 11-foot pipe into two pipes, each eight feet in diameter. The picture is in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924.
