MOPPING UP OPERATIONS IN BURMA IN preparation of the expedition into Burma, the Iida Corps that concentrated on the border of Thailand and Burma unsheathed their swords when the opportunity of the wargame came ripe. The fighting was at odds, as it happens in any area in the treacherous Asiatic Tropics, for you have to contend with heat and the epidemic- infested forests, but all these obstacles as well as the resistance from the enemy were subdued by the indomitable Japanese Forces. On March 8, the capital, Rangoon was captured and, on May 1 the stronghold in the hinterland, Mandalay also went into submission. And, now we are looking towards India. This edition of Japanese propaganda magazine, “Shin Seiki” (text in Tagalog and English), published by the Department of Information, was brought back to America by Carr and Ruth Hooper who were interned at Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila, Philippines from January 1942 to February 1945. Hand-written notes made by Carr refer to several photos and captions. The camp, also known as the Manila Internment Camp, was run by the Japanese military during World War II and housed over 3,000 internees from January 1942 until February 1945.
