Mr. Burton introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on Forest Reservations and the Protection of Game. April 18, 1902. [Omit the part struck through and insert the part printed in italics.] A BILL Eor the purchase of a national forest reserve in the Southern Appalachian Mountains,to be known as the "National Appalachian Eorest Reserve." 1 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa- 2 tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, 3 That the Secretary of Agriculture is hereby authorized and 4 empowered, in his discretion, to purchase land suited to the 5 purposes of a national forest reserve in the Appalachian 6 Mountains within the States of West Virginia, Virginia, North 7 Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee, 8 in total extent not to exceed four million acres, and to care 9 for, protect, use, and make accessible the said reserve, the 10 same to be known as the ''National Appalachian Eorest 11 Reserve."
