cl4^~ 3^ 7/99 TO BENEFIT ASHEVILLE. The Citizen believes that the Board of Trade at its meeting on Thursday afternoon took proper steps for the betterment of Asheville and for the good of Western North Carolina. The Board of Trade has done good work and will undoubtedly do a great deal more good work. Whatever work is done for Asheville and Western North Carolina should be done by united effort, with a common object and a strong "pull and push together." It is hoped that no legitimate effort will be spared to help the movement for a great Southern National Park In Western North Carolina. Asheville and the western part of this State are already known all over Europe as a great health resort, and no effort should be spared to make them better known. In view of the ravages now being made by timber cutters it is important that earnest work be done to preserve the forests, since they are undoubtedly a great factor in making this region one of the greatest health resorts in the known world. It is a great pity that all the great forests of these mountains are not under intelligent public supervision now, and the people of' Asheville should try to have at least a part of them set apart as a great National park, so that they will be preserved. For this section of the State there is far more money in living trees than in sawed lumber. Every tree that Is cut down from our mountains takes away something from the health-giving and health-renewing qualities of the climate of Western North Carolina. 1 ^- Cp** r;V'7 The parka and ton ■ if Wade, Buncombe 1 qffflrty (I y, were rmn Vj*=terday. but such torily signed up, Indicating itlhe * I in. t n 011 h - nil the part 'of the cltUe Ash' ' PETITIONS ARE AUTHORIZED FOR THE NATIONAL SOUTHERN PARK IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. This 37-page scrapbook was put together by A. H. McQuilkin, a Chicago-based editor who moved to Asheville, North Carolina in the mid-1890s. The scrapbook starts out with an article from one of McQulkin’s own publications, “Southern Pictures and Pencillings,” but also includes clippings from other sources including the “Asheville Citizen.” Most of the clippings date to 1899. McQuilkin and Ambler were founding members of the Appalachian National Park Association, which promoted the idea of a national park in the southern Appalachians. The association disbanded in 1905. The frontispiece of the book is inscribed “Per C. P. Ambler/1929,” the date Ambler donated the material to the State Archives.
