Responsibility to Land Awareness Renew

  • This newspaper article titled “Responsibility To Land Awareness Renew” is part of the Samuel Robert Owens Collection. Samuel Robert Owens (1918-1995) was stationed at Cavite Naval Yard in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II. He was a member of the crew of the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9), which was actively involved in the defense of the Bataan peninsula until the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. The majority of the crew of USS Canopus, including Owens, were captured by the Japanese at Corregidor, and became prisoners of war. Owens remained a POW until the end of the war and received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service.
  • Responsibility To Land Awareness Renew mi SAMUEL ROBERT OWENS of Webster has been selected as a participant in mathematics and physical science institute for elementary teachers to be held at Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois, June 21 - July 30, with support from the National Science Foundation. Owens is a retired Navy man with 22 years of service. He is a graduate of Western Carolina College and is working toward a masters degree. He is presently teaching at Log Cabin Elementary School. Owens is married to the former Jacqualin Pangle and they have three children. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burrell of La Grange, Ga., were recent week end visitors of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. General Burrell, of Tuckasegee. Also a friend and fellow student at Auburn University, Ala., accompanied them here for the week end. By E. R. Wilkie Soil Conservation Service Jackson County Soil Stewardship Week, May 21-30, is an important time for people throughout Jackson county, both rural and urban, for it is a time for emphasizing the importance of soil in the lives of Soil Stewardship Week is a time for renewing awareness of mans' responsibility to the land. It is not a reminder to the farmer alone but to everyone who puts a spade into the soil, the contractor with his housing development, the engineer with his highway, the lumberman with his sawmill, and even the gardener with his plot of ground shares in the responsibility this week's emphasis. Without a doubt, both rural and urban dwellers have an interest in the use of our natural resources, particularly the soil. This interest goes beyond the present use of the land. It must take into consideration the demands that will be placed on I land by future generations and the obligation that man has to those that will follow him. [ After all, to whom does the land really belong? Isn't it a fact j that it does not belong to any of j us at all? Isn't the farmer just j steward of the land which he plows as well as everything else ; might acquire in life?
